Update on the Jackie Chan/Jet Li Project ... Plus: Untouchables 2!
by Scott Weinberg | October 31, 2006

A while back we shared the news that Jackie Chan and Jet Li would be co-starring in an epic adventure based on the legend of The Monkey King. And now we have an update on that project. Also, in semi-related news, it looks like that "Untouchables" prequel is getting ready to roll.

From Variety: "Jackie Chan and Jet Li will star together for the first time in a $70 million family pic that Relativity Media will finance and Casey Silver produces. Robert Minkoff will direct, while martial arts expert Yuen Woo-Ping will create the action sequences. Shooting is set for April.

Film is one of two new big-budget projects that Relativity -- backed by hedge fund money -- will be offering to buyers at the American Film Market, which unspools Wednesday in Santa Monica. The second is Brian De Palma's $70 million prequel "The Untouchables: Capone Rising," which Paramount will distribute domestically.

Chan-Li starrer, known as the untitled J&J project, has been rumored for some time, but Relativity, headed by Ryan Kavanaugh, boarded only recently. John Fusco script is based on the legend of the monkey king and his quest to achieve immortality.

Li is set to play two roles, that of the monkey king and the silent monk. Chan will play the monk T'sa-Ho. The two martial-arts masters have long said they would like to appear together in a film and fight each other."

I don't know about "Untouchables 2". Brian De Palma bombed with "The Black Dahlia".

Can they even think of matching the cast from the first untouchables. Brian Depalma should leave the legacy of his good films alone. Which are fewer and fewer.

Wasn't this last Jet Li movie supposed to be "his last"?

bigcfk, every one is about to jump on with "no it wasn't his last..." what ever I'll leave it to them to explain, the "family pic" language does worry me a bit, but now yuen wo ping is involved, so at the very least the fighting sequences are going to rock.

the book of journey to the west has always been design for kids any ways. The major probem I have is having a white guy directing and a white guy writing the script. I know last time Hall Mark made a mini series base on journey to the west and it just turned out to be a big piece of shit.

I don't think that matteres too much, I mean race aside I realize that some one comeing from a diffrent culture may not do journy west the same as a chinese person, but I think a good diretor is a good director. I mean a chinese person directed broke back mountain. then again I don't know this director at all so who knows. considering the story though I hope they have a big special effects budget.

wish list!!
I'll put this one on my wish list of films to be made. I would love to see two great martial artists go at it with style that would make the great Bruce Lee
turn in his grave!!! but trust my words if this is made right it should be great and not watered down kung fu.

It was his last Wushu style film which is popular in Asia. He has done so many of them that he doesn't want to do them anymore. "Fearless" was the last one he said he would do.
