Murugadoss remakes his own 2005 Tamil-language hit, GHAJINI, in this sometimes romantic, sometimes terrifying thriller. A masala mash-up of MEMENTO and the 1970s Bollywood blockbuster SHOLAY, the Hindi-language GHAJINI features Aamir Khan, one of India's finest actors, as tattooed amnesiac Sanjay Singhania. Sanjay, once a successful businessman, is now lost in his own mind, relying on external reminders to focus him on avenging his fiancée's murder. The film has two completely different looks: one for flashbacks--where every character wears supersaturated jewel-tones, the sun shines, and characters drive pink scooters and marigold-adorned Maruti cars--and another for the harrowing present, where Sanjay's yellow and gray world jitters around him as if lit by a strobe at a malevolent disco. In the happier past, Sanjay's fiancée Kalpana (Asin, reprising her role from the Tamil film), like Hema Malini's talkative character in SHOLAY, helps the blind and hides unexpected reservoirs of courage; Aamir Khan, buff and relaxed, charms the audience in a jazz-inflected dance with several vividly costumed digital versions of himself. When Murugadoss's script slams Sanjay Singhania back to his dreadful present, the shock is visceral. Ghajini (Pradeep Singh Rawat), a worthy competitor to SHOLAY's iconic villain Gabbar Singh, not only murders without batting an eyelash, but also sells girls into slavery and dabbles in stolen organs, aided by a small army of thugs. But Sanjay's rage-fueled workouts, stimulated by his repeated re-learning about Kalpana's death, turn him into a formidable opponent. The intense cat-and-mouse game between Ghajini and Aamir Khan's animalistic Sanjay leaves the screen littered with bodies and the audience breathless. In Murugadoss's twisty retelling, however, a final musical number offers a glimpse of hope--and brings the roller-coaster ride to a surprisingly gentle stop. [More]

It's hard to look past that this is a gaudy ripoff of Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000), stealing the idea of short-term memory loss every 15 minutes."

Ozus' World Movie Reviews

An exuberantly excessive and unreasonably entertaining mash-up of musical-comedy romance, action-movie mayhem and psycho-thriller suspense.

Aamir Khan, a teen idol in the early ‘90s turned dashing romantic leading man, has for several years been Bollywood’s most exportable overachiever.

Aamir Khan, as usual, displays his fierce commitment to the role, whether nimbly performing a besotted song and dance or brutally kicking all manner of *ss on his warpath.
