Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talk G.I. Joe
Actors struggle in vain to promote Stop-Loss.
by Jeff Giles | March 18, 2008
Discuss Article
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum are out making the promotional rounds for Stop-Loss -- or trying to, anyway.

Both actors are also starring in Stephen Sommers' upcoming G.I. Joe, so it's pretty much a given that at least 60 percent of the questions they're being asked have to do with the more fanboy-friendly film of the two. This was certainly the case when Gordon-Levitt and Tatum sat down with Collider recently, and the two stars proved themselves willing to drop a few tidbits about their journeys to Real American Hero-dom.

Gordon-Levitt has thus far only been confirmed to play "a major role" in Joe, which got him halfway off the hook as far as describing his experiences behind the scenes -- but he did open up to Collider about what drew him to the project:

Well, what attracted me to being in 'G.I. Joe' was when they showed me the drawings of the character that I was going to get to play. I love the idea of just getting to play something way, way larger and huger than life. It's kind of the opposite of 'Stop Loss,' in fact. 'Stop Loss' is a realistic portrayal of what it's like to be a solider today...'G.I. Joe' is not layered or profound at all; it's just a big thrill ride...it's like, have some fun. And it's a lot of fun. And when I saw those drawings of the character I was going to get to play, I got that feeling of like just being a kid and wow, that's so cool, and I get to be that, and yeah...that's why I wanted to do it.

(Collider then proceeded to ask Gordon-Levitt about rumors that he's starring in the upcoming Akira remake, and received the standard "I haven't seen the script" response.)

Channing Tatum was more forthcoming about what fans can expect from the live-action G.I. Joe -- to the extent that we aren't going to reprint all of his comments here, for fear of sending you into spoiler shock. But we can share that, like many of you, Tatum wasn't initially too keen on the idea of the movie:

You know, I was originally opposed to it. Especially coming off of 'Stop-Loss,' playing a soldier about a really sensitive topic? I had no interest in going to play a fake soldier in a hyper-real kind of fantasy war. I was just like, "Nope. No thanks," and then it came back around and I met on it, and I read the script finally, and the script was great. It actually has nothing to do with war, nothing to do at all. It's 'X-Men' and 'Mission Impossible,' 'Star Wars.' That's how it is. I got kind of excited about it and jumped on.

Wow cool, I was never really a GI Joe fan...and I'm still not! It's so cool that I won't have to watch this! Right on!

JGL hasn't signed on to be in a "cool" film since 10 Things I Hate About You.

I can't believe he would start taking roles now based on fun and not challenging himself and his audiences with films like Manic, Mysterious Skin, Brick and The Lookout. He's been the indie circut's hottest star for a while now and it's hard for this fan to wrap it around his head that he's starring in GI.Joe 'cuz it looks cool.

What happened Joe?!?

I think that as soon as you can call someone "the Indie circuit's hottest star" it is pretty clear that he isnt indie. It's like that repugnant "that band sold out because someone has actually heard of them" argument.

Joseph Gordon Levitt as Cobra Commander still seems wrong to me.

It seems VERY wrong.

It should've been an unknown with the voice of Frank Welker.

Period.

Levitt should play Kyle Browlowski if they make a real South Park movie but not Cobra commander.. Not a good fit.

The new Indy movie looks great

Of the movies you list I've only seen 'The Lookout' (Brick just looked too pretentious). And that movie was horrible. So many plotholes, and why rip off Memento to largely jettison the plot device?

But I did like JGL on 3rd Rock. He has good comic timing. Pity no comedies are made anymore.

Brick >>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Lookout

....and I for one don't care the JGL is starring in "G.I. Joe". I respect actors more for not sticking purely to one type (or class) of film. For instance, looking at a lot of the Australian actors out there. They'll often do really big tentpole films (i.e. Eric Bana in Troy, Hulk etc) but still find the time to come back and support some homegrown, smaller-budget, indie flicks. Then they go back over to the US and make something Oscar worthy like "Munich". This, to me, is the way it should be.

JGL.... hmmmm. Well, I can say this. Cobra Commander where's a mask. You could put a no-name in the same role and say "who the **** is that!!! Cobra Commander is a major character!!!" We'll just have to wait and see. If you remember the GI JOE cartoons, CC's voice was very pre-pubesent.... crackling all over hell's acre. Can't get any worse than that.

I was very anti-JGL until I saw 'Manic'. He completely changed my opinion of his acting ability to the point that I have now seen nearly all of his movies, and I greatly anticipate his future projects.

With Heath now gone, I really do believe that the future of true character acting rests inside JGL. I think he will be amazing in G.I. Joe because he really grasps what his character should be doing.

Uh...Astr0creep...Frank Welker was the voice of MEGATRON, so wrong arch-villian. Mr. Welker did, however, voice some characters for G.I. Joe, such as: Torch, Wild Bill, and a few others.

You're probably thinking of Chris Latta, who voiced Cobra Commander (& Starscream). Unfortunately, he won't be able to voice any of our beloved characters anymore as he passed away in '94.

I mention Frank Welker BECAUSE I am aware of Chris Latta's unfortunate demise.

Frank Welker could pull it off and he's one of the big Voice Overrers that use to include Mr. Latta and Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime).
