See Ray Park As Snake Eyes In First G.I. Joe Image!
Darth Maul packs a Glock.
by Jeff Giles | March 24, 2008
Discuss Article
The unveiling of Stephen Sommers' G.I. Joe cast in costume has begun -- and it all starts with (who else?) Ray Park as Snake Eyes.

Over the weekend, USA Today gave fans their first look at the black-clad ninja brought to life, running a pair of stills alongside a brief interview with Sommers, who describes his film's Snake Eyes thusly:

"He's the world's greatest ninja, but he's also next-generation. He's not afraid to use a sword one second, and a split-second later he's pulling out his Glock. His chief nemesis is arguably the world's other great ninja, Storm Shadow. The two grew up together, were blood brothers and now are mortal enemies."

Regardless of fans' quibbles with Sommers' take on the preeminent ninja of your youth -- and there's bound to be quibbling, because, well, that's what fans do -- these shots of Park are pretty great, albeit in a "cooler version of the Black Power Ranger" way. And if you haven't been keeping yourself up to date on just who's starring in this thing, you're in luck. Take it away, USA Today:

Channing Tatum ("Step Up") plays all-American team leader Duke. Rachel Nichols (Alias) plays the crossbow-wielding Scarlett, Marlon Wayans is paratrooper Ripcord and Dennis Quaid is the commander, Hawk. On the evil-doer side, Sienna Miller plays the raven-haired Baroness, Christopher Eccleston is Destro, the arms dealer who hides behind a silver mask, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock From the Sun, Brick) plays multiple roles, including the Cobra Commander.

Sommers tells USA Today that his G.I. Joe is an origins story; the paper describes his task as explaining to the viewer "why the bad guy wears a metal mask, why Snake Eyes doesn't talk and other strange things kids took for granted." The director promises that "for people who know nothing about it, it'll make sense, and to people who love this stuff, it'll show where they all came from."

For nostalgia sake I might go see this movie for a good Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes battle. I think Ray Park does an excellent job with these types of characters and should make a good Snake Eyes.

On a side note, I'm glad that they actually gave him what looks like a actual "ninja style" sword and not a samurai sword. Granted ninjas are trained to use anything and everything as a weapon, I've seen too many ninjas running around with Samurai style swords, which is annoying.

ok, i like gordon-levitt, but cobra commander? say word?

i don't care if him and channing tatum are both 28, they look like they're 19. there's no way the dude from "supercross" and "step up 2 tha streetz" is qualified to by the team leader of Joe. oh wait, i forgot he played 'boy in church scene' in "war of the worlds." exactly: "BOY" not army man.

but for all this critiquing, did the movie ever really have a shot? Seriously, Sommers' last directorial appearance (aside from his helming the visual portion of "Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride") was the abomination "Van Helsing."

An automatic spike gun shaped like a crossbow? i wonder what the G.I. Joe laser guns will look like. nevermind, i guess they're poppin glocks now.

I was never a Snake Eyes fan. I liked all the originals like Duke and Hawk.
I would also LOOOOOVE to see at least 1 appearance from Sargent Slaughter. Doesn't have to do much, just yell at someone or something. That right there would make the movie for me.

I think this thing is going to be bloody fun. Well done on the first pic. Multiple roles for the kid, eh? Interesting.

'cuz when I think 'Cobra Commander' I think 'that kid from 3rd Rock..'

I like Ray Park and I think this would be a great use of his talents.
Having said that, this entire production feels kinda 'also-ran' as in 'Okay, they did Transformers and Blew that sh#t OUT, so if we take a similar-era toy and throw money at it then *HOW* can we *LOSE*!?'

Then again, Transformers was a lot more important to me as a kid than 'Joe' was...

Love Ray Park! I wish I would have gotten to meet him when he came to Dragon*Con last year.

"shots"? "images"?... Is someone having counting issues or am I missing something?

Anyway, yeah. Snake Eyes looks cool in the PICTURE. Note: singular. And Tombstone, gotta agree with ya. I liked Joe in passing, but I liked it best when they finally killed Duke. (or did he come back to life? I don't remember). Anyway, it was cool to finally see a weapon hurt somebody. Because, man, for elite soldiers, these dudes were some incredibly terrible shooters. ;-)

that is preety dead on based on the 2 figure and most of his comic appr., and I am a big fan of having the comics and movie figures look a like. But for some reason, I would have loved for him to be more commando then future ninji. Perhaps a blak ski mask with googles

i think ray park is perfect for snake eyes but we will have to wait and see on the other characters and a trailer. i hope they have someone good for storm shadow. as far as the kid from 3rd rock i really dont see him as cobra commander and what other parts will he be playing.

FYI - most of the toys used real-world weapons (like M1911A1s and stuff), rather than lasers. I think most of the laser stuff was the cartoon.

does anybody know what this will possibly be rated? i'm assuming pg 13, but an R rating would be very, very welcome. especially since most people who grew up with this are now old enough to see a more brutal version of it which is deserved.

@thesmilingpsycho Don't be a retard - there is no way that GI Joe will EVER be rated R. And there is absolutely no reason for it either. It is a movie based on a freaking cartoon for crying out loud. Not every movie is made better by the inclusion of swear words and exploding heads.

brad 3000, it was just a question dude. i know not every movie is made better with an R rating, but it is about war and there are going to be alot of different weapons used. i know it will prolly be pg 13, but an R rating would still be badass. like i said that cartoon is old and alot of its core audience has grown up now, but i'm sure they will ressurect it once this movie comes out.

Turn that black ski mask to green and you have beach-head! lol.... so it doesn't really make sense in altering what the guy looked like. I think the coolest detail I noticed first was the eye-grill! It looked so much like the comic/cartoon, I was astonished! :-)

Channing Tatum was probably cast as Duke before he can dance... I can almost see it coming: 'Channing Tatum stars in and as: 'Duke of the Street'"

Jokes apart, I'll let him prove himself before passing judgment! :-)
