Consensus: Bizarre and clumsily plotted, Gigli is a mess. As for its stars, Affleck and Lopez lack chemistry.

In Gigli, Martin Brest’s (Scent of a Woman, Midnight Run) unconventional romantic comedy, Larry Gigli (Ben Affleck), a low-level hood is given a high-level assignment to kidnap Brian (Justin Bartha), the psychologically challenged younger brother of a powerful federal prosecutor to help save a mob boss from going to prison. Hiding out in his one-bedroom apartment with Brian, Gigli is shocked when Ricki (Jennifer Lopez), a gorgeous, free-spirited female enforcer is sent to assist him because his boss thinks he’s likely to screw up. And from that moment on, Gigli’s world is turned upside down. Gigli finds himself falling in love with the unavailable Ricki and goes to extreme lengths to win her affection. The more she resists, the stronger the attraction becomes. By letting their feelings get in the way of business, Gigli and Ricki set in motion an unlikely chain of events that just could endanger their plans for a long-term relationship – and their lives. Torture. Impossible to imagine how it could've been worse.

It's seriously terrible, and it'll teach everyone involved to read the script before they agree to make a film.

No, it's not the worst film ever made, but it is a sickening exercise in smugness and self-love.

It tries a valiant effort to be smart and edgy, and feels like something that's always edging at greatness but never quite managing to break on through.

Mitigating factors: a carefully curated sampling of J-Lo butt cleavage, and an arrhythmic Christopher Walken cameo which momentarily diverts the doomed ship from collision with the iceberg.

I love this movie. Has anything ever been so deliciously awful? Nothing says quality like J. Lo as a faux lesbian.

I can't say that I enjoyed watching Gigli but it certainly was an instructive lesson in how good ideas can go horribly wrong.

Gigli is so unrelentingly bad that people may want to see it just as a bonding experience; viewers (read: victims) will want to talk and comfort each other afterwards.

Brest would have to go back to his outline to repair this lemon and give America something akin to what it's told it really wants -- a helping of Lopez-Affleck home movies.

In a brief cameo, Christopher Walken sums up Affleck's screen presence when he tells Gigli: 'I know -- you don't know nothin'. I can tell just by lookin' at you.'

This isn't a good film, but, when set alongside the likes of Dumb and Dumberer and Legally Blonde 2, Jen & Ben offer less pain.

In what may go down as the most embarrassing, imprudent attempt at sexy dialogue in the history of cinema... Lopez ask(s) to be orally pleasured with the line, "Turkey time! Gobble, gobble."
