Consensus: Bizarre and clumsily plotted, Gigli is a mess. As for its stars, Affleck and Lopez lack chemistry.

In Gigli, Martin Brest’s (Scent of a Woman, Midnight Run) unconventional romantic comedy, Larry Gigli (Ben Affleck), a low-level hood is given a high-level assignment to kidnap Brian (Justin Bartha), the psychologically challenged younger brother of a powerful federal prosecutor to help save a mob boss from going to prison. Hiding out in his one-bedroom apartment with Brian, Gigli is shocked when Ricki (Jennifer Lopez), a gorgeous, free-spirited female enforcer is sent to assist him because his boss thinks he’s likely to screw up. And from that moment on, Gigli’s world is turned upside down. Gigli finds himself falling in love with the unavailable Ricki and goes to extreme lengths to win her affection. The more she resists, the stronger the attraction becomes. By letting their feelings get in the way of business, Gigli and Ricki set in motion an unlikely chain of events that just could endanger their plans for a long-term relationship – and their lives. If one has to find something positive to say about Gigli, it would have to be this: at least it isn’t likely to spawn a sequel.

How any relationship could be expected to survive after Gigli is a mystery. So if you're thinking of bringing someone for the laugh, be prepared to go home alone.

Consider the missed opportunities here. Two attractive stars, a supporting cast that one would dream of, and a director with solid credentials. Didn’t anyone read the script before making it?

Gigli certainly isn't the worst film of the year, as it has been made out to be, but it does make one wonder if the lynch mob mentality against certain cinematic endeavors isn't at least a little deserved.

The stars display zip chemistry, but seem to find themselves adorable. They're so taken with each other they don't need an audience.

It will be of interest as a fascinating historical curio because it so fully embodies the paradoxical nature of stardom in the early years of the 21st century.

Shapeless and without a shred of originality, the movie mimics and copies pieces of a number of old movies, all superior in every way.

Even when it doesn’t work it remains more entertaining than a lot of tidier flicks.

Because of its humble proficiency, seriousness of intent and sexual adventurousness, it's become the unfortunate pariah of a film culture that expects Hollywood to turn out only gee-whiz showiness and superficial plays at emotion.

There were tons of worse movies this year. Maybe this is like comparing Saddam Hussein to Hitler, but Gigli isn't just the lesser of two evils, or three, or four.
