Beautifully lit, designed and photographed, it is, like much of the Dutch master's work, more to be admired than emotionally embraced.

She becomes a maid in the house of Johannes Vermeer and gradually attracts the master painter's attention. Though worlds apart in upbringing, education and social standing, Vermeer recognizes Griet's intuitive understanding of color and light and slowly draws her into the mysterious world of his paintings. Vermeer is a perfectionist, often taking months to finish a painting. His shrewd mother-in-law, Maria Thins, struggles to maintain the family's lavish lifestyle on the income from his painstakingly meager output. Seeing that Griet inspires Vermeer, she takes the dangerous decision to allow their clandestine relationship to develop. Plunged into a chaotic Catholic household run by Vermeer's volatile wife Catharina, surrounded by an ever-increasing brood of children, Griet is increasingly at risk of exposure or worse. Twelve-year-old Cornelia, a mischievous girl who sees more than she should, quickly grows jealous and suspicious of Griet and is determined to cause trouble. Alone and unprotected, Griet also contends with the attentions of Pieter, a local butcher boy, and Vermeer's patron, the wealthy and lascivious Master van Ruijven, who is frustrated that his money does not buy him control over the artist. While Griet falls increasingly under Vermeer's spell, she cannot be sure of his feelings for her. The Machiavellian van Ruijven, sensing the intimacy between master and maid, gleefully contrives a commission for Vermeer to paint Griet alone. The result will be one of the greatest paintings ever created, but at what cost? [More]

Reviews for Girl with a Pearl Earring
Girl With a Pearl Earring brilliantly captures the texture of ordinary life.
To earn its props, a period film must resonate in our time. A movie about art doubles that demand. Webber has delivered the goods and then some.
An extraordinary embodiment of the period, [Johansson] looks to have stepped right into a Vermeer frame.
Virtually every shot in Girl with a Pearl Earring is suitable for framing.
We're left wishing for more insight into the people and less into the process.
It's a striking experience of light, color and composition. But it's also somewhat stifling.
Pic is stunningly beautiful, but feels every bit of its 95-minute runtime.
For the first time in her brilliant young career, Scarlett Johansson is the centerpiece of a film -- and she carries it mostly through her wonderfully expressive face.
At the end, after being teased and seduced, we are at last allowed to gaze on the famous portrait itself, more fascinating and complete than any attempt to build upon it.
Although sometimes dramatically slight, "Girl with Pearl" stands out for its beauty. If nothing else.
First-time director Peter Webber and cinematographer Eduardo Serra nearly make up for the biopic blather by lighting the film so exquisitely that each frame looks like a Vermeer.
If the scope of the film feels small, Girl With a Pearl Earring fills that scope to bursting with subtle glory.
[Johansson's] memorable turn here represents a wonderful commingling of the right looks with the right acting decisions.
Dancing on the edge of dullness, Girl is continually saved by the look of things.
