Consensus: Drawing on strong performances by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola's continuation of Mario Puzo's Mafia saga set new standards for sequels that have yet to be matched or broken.

On the streets of Hell's Kitchen in 1917 New York City, Vito is initiated into the ways of the local Cosa Nostra by his friend Clemenza (Bruno Kirby). After killing the local mafioso in a towel-wrapped gun, Vito becomes the new man to be respected and feared. Meanwhile, a dour Michael Corleone negotiates with business partner Hyman Roth (legendary Method-acting teacher Lee Strasberg in his first film role) in Cuba and testifies in front of a Washington Senate committee. Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen), Diane Keaton (Kay Corleone), Talia Shire (Connie Corleone), and John Cazale (Fredo Corleone), reprising their roles from THE GODFATHER, are outstanding as the people forced to watch the new godfather's moral destruction. De Niro, speaking in Italian, captures the mannerisms of Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone from the first film brilliantly. THE GODFATHER PART II is one of the only major sequels ever made that might just surpass the original. [More]

Reviews for The Godfather Part II
Each story on its own would work better. Together, it makes it harder to get involved in any of them.
El Padrino II es una pintura fantástica y detallada de la naturaleza del mal.
The Mother of All Sequels: a film at once both greater and lesser than its predecessor
Unlike many critics, I don't feel the sequel has the weight of the original
Director Francis Ford Coppola destroys the rule that says all sequels are vastly inferior to the originals
Even if the 1972 film The Godfather had not been made, its sequel would still be a monumental achievement.
Coppola was given a free hand with this sequel, and his deft directorial touches are everywhere, particularly in the earlier historical sequences.
Few sequels have expanded upon the original with the faithfulness and detail of this one.
I am a big fan of both pictures, but prefer the original slightly for its originally and the intensity of the character's emotions.
The Godfather, Part II (1974) of the Godfather trilogy continues the saga of the Corleone Family, serving as both a prologue and a sequel,
