William Boyd adapted his own comic novel about life in the African country of Ninjana, a fictional British colony. Starring Colin Friels as Morgan Leafy, first secretary at the British high commission, director Bruce Beresford's film follows this dim-witted, perpetually hung-over devotee of the grape as he pursues every woman within eyeshot. The new high commissioner, Arthur Fanshawe (John Lithgow), suddenly arrives in Ninjana, wishing nothing more than a swift promotion elsewhere. To this end, he informs Leafy that substantial oil reserves have been discovered in the country and suggests that he cultivate the leading candidate for the presidency, Professor Sam Adekunle (Louis Gossett Jr.), to secure the deposits for British interests. The upstanding Leafy responds by attempting to seduce Fanshawe's daughter, Priscilla (Sarah-Jane Fenton), before realizing that he might be suffering from a venereal disease. This leads to a visit with Dr. Alex Murray (Sean Connery), who can only marvel at this poor excuse for a human being. Not to worry, Leafy continues with his labors, having a go at the comely Mrs. Adekunle (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer) and Fanshawe's wife (Diana Rigg). [More]
