The Grudge 3 Gets a Director
Raimi-produced franchise continues stubborn refusal to die.

Blog Article | Discuss Article
Sam Raimi still has a Grudge with moviegoers.

Shock Till You Drop reports that Raimi's Ghost House shingle is moving ahead with plans for The Grudge 3, and has tapped Toby Wilkins to take over for Takashi Shimizu in the director's chair. From the article:

An FX vet and the director of The Grudge 2 tie-ins, "Tales of the Grudge," Wilkins is in development on the third chapter while he wraps post-production on the creature feature Splinter for ContentFilm Intl. Ghost House plans to roll cameras as early as January 2008 depending on script development (an unnamed writer is currently at work on a draft).

The third Grudge installment will follow 2006's Amber Tamblyn-led The Grudge 2, which earned a remarkable 10 percent on the Tomatometer (and a $39 million theatrical gross).

And the fact they are switching directors, from an actual director to a special effects guy - does not sound promising. This is how franchises die. The Grudge was actually quite good and scary, but the Grudge 2 was too much. What's the point if there is no way out? It seemed to be breaking the rules established in the first film, adding unnecessary plot points, etc. But its still probably going to be better than whatever the newbie's going to come up with.

'This is how Franchises die'

could someone please point to the franchise in this photograph? This was ONE *decent* horror movie, and a re-make, at that. The sequel's comparatively mediocre box office tends to prove my point. Ditching the director who had the original idea does, also.

The notion that everything ever filmed was meant to be a franchise a) fits horribly well within modern Hollywood and b)makes my soul bleed.

Stop the remakes. I rather see the original versions with subtitles. What say you?

I surprisingly liked THE GRUDGE 2 and I still think that a GRUDGE 3 is too much.
