Stands as a document of what it felt like to be a New Yorker -- or, really, to be a human being -- in the weeks after 9/11.

In Tribeca, located blocks away from Ground Zero, Manhattan Flea Theater's Artistic Director, Jim Simpson, decided to commission a play from his friend Anne Nelson, a Columbia School of Journalism professor, after hearing her true story of meeting with a New York City Fire Captain to help him write eulogies for his fallen fire fighters. Her story became THE GUYS, which has now been adapted and directed by Simpson for the big screen and stars Sigourney Weaver (Simpson's wife) as Joan, a freelance journalist living and working in Manhattan during the days following September 11th. Joan is horrified by the tragedy, but feels like an incapable bystander, until she meets Nick (Anthony LaPaglia) a veteran New York City Fire Captain who must speak at numerous memorial services for his fallen men. Paralyzed by grief, the big-hearted blue-collar hero is incapable of expressing his true feelings until Joan begins to carefully elicit touching stories and anecdotes from him. Joan sensitively responds to Nick's colorful and mournful memories and slowly the very real human lives of his firefighters begin to take the shape of the eulogies he must deliver. Together, the two New Yorkers, affected by September 11th in very different ways, comfort and heal each other in this very personal and moving tribute to the fallen heroes of 9-11. [More]

Reviews for The Guys
Simply and eloquently articulates the tangled feelings of particular New Yorkers deeply touched by an unprecedented tragedy.
Too much virtue can burden a film. But The Guys, based on the play Anne Nelson wrote in response to 9/11, earns its sentiment.
The movie is emotionally convincing, and it's a thoughtful memorial to firefighters who died in the tower collapse.
Though it's not very well shot or composed or edited, the score is too insistent and the dialogue is frequently overwrought and crudely literal, the film shatters you in waves.
In its own remarkable and unshowy way, this movie is truly about how Sept. 11 seemed to equalize and unite New Yorkers across imaginary barriers of class and lifestyle.
There's hardly any action, and, understandably, it feels stage-y at times, but the weight of the subject and solid, heartfelt delivery will keep you grounded through to the tearful end.
It demands we look back and shed a tear (or buckets full of them), but also helps us to march forward with a small smile worn in honor of those who leave behind happy memories.
Upper West Sidey exercise in narcissism and self-congratulation disguised as a tribute.
Sigourney Weaver shines as a writer who helps a New York fire captain, played by Anthony LaPaglia, find the words to remember the men he lost on Sept. 11.
Those who aren't put off by the film's austerity will find it more than capable of rewarding them.
This isn't a narrative film -- I don't know if it's possible to make a narrative film about September 11th, though I'm sure some will try -- but it's as close as anyone has dared to come.
