Trailer Bulletin: Superman Returns
by Scott Weinberg | November 21, 2005
Discuss Article
If you were out buying popcorn prior to the beginning of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," you might have missed the rather swanky "Superman Returns" trailer. If that's the case, just click on over to the film's trailer page and check it out there!

As repeated numerous times:

"Superman Returns" is the new film from Bryan Singer, the director of both "X-Men" flicks. The filmmaker is working from a screenplay by his X-colleagues Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty. The long-anticipated resurgence of the "Superman" series stars newcomer Brandon Routh as the man of steel, and he's joined by an ensemble that includes Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, James Marsden, Sam Huntington, Frank Langella, Eva Marie Saint, Kal Penn, and Parker Posey.

"Superman Returns" flies into theaters on June 30th. Until then we can enjoy the adorably retro teaser trailer.

Why is the film so dark in color?

I agree. In some scenes it looks like they took the environment from Sin City and blended it with the classic Superman movie. Not what I expected. It'll still be great though.

Looks like a worthy remake...maybe as good as Batman Begins. Maybe they should have called it "Superman Begins". I like that they used John Williams score in the teaser to create a bridge between the series.

sigh... no nalgener, Batman Begins is named such because it's about how Batman began, his origins. Superman Returns is about his life as a superhero, as far as I know. The WB TV show Smallville (which is on tonight at 9 ET) is about Superman's origins, so if anything were to be called Superman Begins, that would be it. Tonight better be a pretty pimped episode though, I'm psuperpsyched.

I have a problem with the way they cast the movie, cept for Lex. It's supposed to be about an older Superman and Lois, yet they cast two very young people. Hell, Kate Bosworth is only 22. She has a 4 year old in the movie. This movie is horribly miscast for the script that they have.

Brandon Routh just doesn't make a convincing Superman. He's a fine Clark Kent, but Superman has always seemed...bigger to me. Like, more muscular. Routh definitely doesn't look like somebody faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Little weird relying so much on an old version. Imagine if the "Batman Begins" teaser featured music and voice-over from the '89 film...

well Singer's looking to connect this film to the other Superman films, which is why it's called "Superman Returns" (he has to have been here before to have returned, naturally) and why the use of some of Brando's dialogue in the trailer makes sense (he's also using some bits of Brando from the previous films as well as bits that were cut from the film). "Batman Begins" has no ties to the other Batman films, so use of their music and dialogue wouldn't make sense.

and i think "Superman Returns" looks so dark because Metropolis would be a darker place without Superman. otherwise, why would they need Superman to come back in the first place if things are so fine without him (which i heard will play a major part in the plot, whether the world really needs Superman back or not)? so Superman's return isn't going to immediately brighten things up in Metropolis after he's been gone for so long.

I like, I like. "Flim springfield" wonders why the teaser uses elements from the 1978 Dick Donner film. Probably because that movie was a cultural landmark. To this day, it's still the best movie version of a comic book superhero ever made (yep, better than "Spiderman"). The WB "Smallville" series rips off from it shamelessly. John William's musical score has got to be one of the greatest ever written for a film: his signature tune for the Man of Steel himself is one for the ages. It's the perfect bridge between the old film and the new.

Still ... these kinds of movies rise or fall on the strength of their villains. I'd be interested in seeing who plays the bad guy. Until we know that we won't know whether we're in for a good film or a bad film. But ... off to a good start!

I believe this film is a sequel. Batman Begins was not a sequel or a prequel, but the start of a new series/franchise.

And Lex Luthor is the big bad in this movie, played by Kaiser Soze.

I love how they used the original score, it gave me chills when It started playing, very powerful music, and a very good teaser.
