Consensus: Neither scary nor funny, The Haunted Mansion is as lifeless as the ghosts in the movie.

Shrouded in fog and mystery, the mansion was once a stately antebellum palace that hosted New Orleans' wealthiest. Now it's the creepy and crumbling home to a love struck 19th century gentleman, 999 ghosts, and a hilarious and hair-raising battle for "home rule." Realtor Jim Evers (EDDIE MURPHY) and his wife and business partner Sara get a call late one night from mansion owner Edward Gracey, who is looking to sell his property. Smelling the biggest deal of their career, Jim, Sara and their two children pay a visit to the mansion, located on a remote bayou.A torrential thunderstorm of mysterious origin strands the Evers family in the old mansion with the brooding, eccentric Gracey, his mysterious butler Ramsley, and a variety of residents both seen and unseen. At first, Jim scoffs at Gracey's stories about ghosts and hauntings, until he unearths the mystery of the mansion and finds that his wife Sara has unexpected connections to its haunted past. THE HAUNTED MANSION is directed by Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King," "Stuart Little") and features stunning special effects and make-up design by six-time Academy Award® winner Rick Baker ("An American Werewolf in London," "Men in Black," "The Nutty Professor," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"), visual effects by Sony Pictures Imageworks, Inc., and sets by Oscar®-winning production designer John Myhre ("Elizabeth," "X-Men," "Chicago"). -- © Disney Pictures [More]

Reviews for The Haunted Mansion
Rob Minkoff has directed a movie that's nearly laughless and nowhere near as frightening as what's happened to Eddie Murphy's career.
Feels like something that was churned out through a machine; Disney Live-Action Cheese By Committee.
If the creative folk at Disney are going to keep using the theme parks as an idea pool for films, they should stick to the “Pirates” mold and break the “Haunted Mansion” one.
Following the plot of the ride, as well as littering the screen with beautiful visual homages big and small, the film has less wiggle room to really come alive on its own.
There's disappointingly little in its 99 minutes that's better than what the ride has been doing for years in 10.
Eddie Murphy does a sterile job as the film's star, but it is Jennifer Tilly who shines in this otherwise flat film.
The only thing scary about this film is the sound of Walt turning over in his grave.
When the three hitchhiking ghosts appear, you'll be more than ready to join them in getting the heck out of Dodge.
The Haunted Mansion was made in the spirit of giving everyone in the family something to enjoy together. It’s successful at that level.
Learn from the Evers family: The Haunted Mansion is not worth the detour.
...a lame and transparent pseudo-amusing scarefest...has all the whimsy and cheeky movement of an overcrowded parking lot at Disneyland...a generic goose bump ride
This one just makes you wonder: Does all of Hollywood operate out of one computer room?
For those of you in the flyover states who've never been able to afford a trip to the Disney parks, or...simply don't want to pay exorbitant admission prices.
A movie that, while consistently amusing, plays like a hackneyed effort to stretch a few minutes of ride into a coherent, hour-and- a-half story.
A pleasant and atmospheric family romp, offering enough mildly chilling thrills to keep everyone entertained during its brief running time.
More Disneyland ride than movie, short on plot and long on dazzling visuals for the kiddies.
While it may supply giggles and shivers to preteens, grownups should think twice before entering this all-too-haunted house.
