INTERNET RELEASE: APRIL 2001 BMW's THE HIRE is an innovative Internet film series that combines a unique marketing program with terrific short films made by some of the world's finest directors. Each of the five primary films in the series stars Clive Owen (CROUPIER) as the Driver, who gets involved with famous, mysterious clients seeking different destinations while being tracked and hunted by murderous gangs, suspicious spouses, and fanatical papparazzi. The films, of course, feature dangerous car chases and terrific stunts (that show off the myriad ability of different BMW models) while also telling compelling stories that end with creative plot twists. John Frankenheimer's AMBUSH revolves around a diamond heist double cross; Ang Lee's CHOSEN centers on a young Tibetan child wih mystical qualities; Wong Kar-Wai's THE FOLLOW features the Driver revealing the secrets to following another vehicle without being noticed; Guy Ritchie's STAR focuses on a nasty diva (Madonna) who needs to get to her next show while avoiding the media and her somewhat devoted entourage. Alejandro González Iñárritu's POWDER KEG takes place in a South American battle zone, as a New York Times war photographer can't stop taking pictures while the bullets fly all around him. The series also includes behind-the-scenes footage that demonstrates how certain stunts were done and shows some of the special camera setups that were invented to get the best action shots; each individual movie can also be viewed with director's commentary that discusses how and why each film was made. Be sure to download the special BMW Interactive Film Player to get a bigger, crisper image, and don't overlook Ben Younger's important Sub-Stories, which include Web site and telephone hints that tie in with the main films.
