Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) is an unassuming adolescent whose family has been cursed for generations. One day, after Stanley is falsely accused of stealing a pair of sneakers, he is sentenced to 18 months at Camp Green Lake. But when he gets there, he discovers that this camp is really more like a prison. Under the supervision of the fiery Mr. Sir (Jon Voight) and goofy Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson), Stanley and his cohorts must spend each day digging holes in the desert, in order "to build character." Or at least that's what The Warden (Sigourney Weaver) says. When Stanley finally gathers up the courage to escape the camp, he and fellow escapee Zero (Khleo Thomas) stumble across a secret that will expose Camp Green Lake for the evil place that it is, and erase the Yelnats family curse forever. Director-producer Andrew Davis (THE FUGITIVE) performs a miraculous feat with HOLES, crafting a family film that is smart, funny, and engaging. Sachar's story teaches enormously valuable lessons about respect, teamwork, and honesty, making HOLES a must-see for individuals everywhere. [More]

An honestly extraordinary maturation performance by Even Stevens' Shia LaBeouf proves Disney truly has monopoly over the most talented youth actors

...unlike so many films to be churned out of the mouse house in these recent times, it's pleasant, inspired, sweet and generally entertaining.

Those who have read the book will no doubt overlook the film’s shortcomings and parents will welcome a movie that doesn’t talk down to its youthful audience.

To my surprise the film was incredibly entertaining and turned what is essentially a book geared toward young readers into a film that will resonate with audiences of any age.

Imagine directing a movie called "Holes" and realizing that if you didn't dig deep enough, your movie would be a shallow, inconsequential pit. If the irony didn't kill you, critics and audiences would.

Holes amounts to a look that is hot and leaves you grabbing for the Coke in the cup holder, wiping your brow and pondering a way to check your armpits without the person sitting next to you noticing.

Coast (Halifax, Nova Scotia)

Witless, charmless, dreary as the desert setting itself, and inexcusably sloppy in its attempts to meld two flashback strands into its main, dopey story.
