Although the film is a comedy, it can't overcome the fact that it is profoundly sad that people in this country are so spiritually starved they would seek fulfillment by watching a shopping channel.

Reviews for Holy Man
Whatever your conclusion, Eddie Murphy does come off as the least slimed by the proceedings. Is it luck, smart self-marketing or divine intervention?
This film is funny, but despite its subject matter, or perhaps because of it, this is a movie without a soul.
Nothing in this film works except for an occasionally frantic funny line reading from Goldblum and maybe a couple of the products being sold.
It's also troublesome that Murphy, a generally charismatic actor, is downright dull here. He and Goldblum are curiously flat in their line readings; they don't seem convinced by the story they're asked to act out, and with good reason.
The movie is dominated not by Eddie Murphy but by Jeff Goldblum, a versatile actor indeed, who can flesh out a comic performance as easily as he can horrify us in the role of a fly.
While Murphy probably has what it takes to make the comedian-to-serious actor transition, he needs to do what Martin, Williams, and Carrey did: hold out for a good script.
There's a terrific movie to be made about home-shopping and the folks addicted to it, but 'Holy Man' is not that film.
The film never really explains where G came from or where he's going.
There's precious little comedy here in this tired romantic comedy set amid a television-age satire.
Except for a few funny interchanges in GBSN's production booth, Holy Man is a disaster.
How bad could a comedy starring Eddie Murphy and Jeff Goldblum really be? Well, let's put it this way … you won't ever hear me asking that particular question again.
Who knew that in 16 years Eddie Murphy, who made such a brash, raucous big-screen splash in 48 Hrs., would become... cuddly.
About halfway through Holy Man the terrible reality sets in: Oh, no, they mean for us to take this seriously.
It's a PG rated mediocrity that, instead of aiming to be hilarious, aims to be "nice."
