Consensus: Despite strong performances and a unique style, The Hottest State is too self-conscious and pretentious to truly succeed.

The Oscar-nominated actor adapts his own novel for the screen in this romance set in New York City. When 20-year-old William (Mark Webber, BROKEN FLOWERS) meets Sara (Catalina Sandino Moreno) at a bar in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood, he falls fast and hard. He's an actor while she's struggling to be a singer, and their creative, nervous personalities make them a combustible couple. From their playful acting-out of their future break-up to the pain of the event when it actually occurs, their relationship is a series of highs and lows familiar to anyone who's felt the emotions of 20-something romance. As a director and screenwriter, Hawke clearly admires his frequent collaborator, Richard Linklater. The pair has made many films together, most notably BEFORE SUNRISE and its sequel BEFORE SUNSET, and like these films, Hawke's THE HOTTEST STATE isn't driven by an elaborate plot. Instead, it relies on dialogue and on the relationship of its characters to move the film forward. The romance between William and Sarah feels genuine from its sweet inception to its heartbreaking end. Hawke has assembled a great cast here, including Webber and Oscar nominee Michelle Williams, but it's the women who play the couple's mothers who really shine. As Sarah's overbearing mother, Sonia Braga is captivating in her performance. In the small but pivotal role of William's mom, Laura Linney displays as much talent as she's brought to meatier parts in films such as YOU CAN COUNT ON ME. The film's soundtrack is just as impressive as its cast, with offerings from indie favorites such as Cat Power and Feist. Songwriter Jesse Harris wrote the songs, and they're the perfect accompaniment to this intimate film about love and heartbreak. [More]

This is a beautifully made, involving film, but it would have been so much stronger with a bit of careful editing.

Hawke quite capably taps into the bittersweet complexities of young, love-struck idiocy.

Smart, sexy and achingly true, The Hottest State is both funny and heart breaking.

Despite some weak writing, Hawke's second feature, an adaptation of his authobiographical novel, is a moody, quiet memory film about love and heartbreak that's more interesting than the vanity project such material would sugggest.

Having written the source material, Hawke had veto power of his characters’ individual quirks before he put them in front of a camera. Perhaps it’s this degree of control that keeps the temperature in State just right.

Hawke has made this movie his way and the result is a story that is by turns romantic and disquieting.

Heartbreak has been portrayed on film many times, in many ways, but Hawke and his actors find a whole new language for it.

As a bonus it's got the best soundtrack of any movie this year. Hawke, who is the first cousin once removed of Tennesee Williams, proves himself to have a good eye for the small world of big love.

A charming piece of sadness about love's all-consuming, confusing power and its ability to heal and wound only seconds apart.

The Hottest State is thoroughly infused with its creator's pretentious indie-bohemian persona.

At times this indie is as repetitive and self-indulgent as its protagonist, but it captures a bit of the madness of being unrequitedly in love.

It’s a small film, it’s a mild recommendation, but I still think it’s worth checking out.

Ethan Hawke’s earnest, talky film The Hottest State, which he adapted from his own semi-autobiographical 1997 novel, doggedly peels away the gloss to dive into the emotional swamp where two young people get lost in each other.

[The two main characters] are in all honesty the least sympathetic and most egregiously boring romantic pair that I've seen onscreen in ages.

Listen, if you're not predisposed to untrained method actors exploiting their worst instincts, State is going to feel like a thunderstorm of hot razor blades raining down on your soft pink senses from frame one.
