Consensus: Insipid and mirthless, I-Spy bares little resemblance to the TV series that inspired it.

To Scott's dismay, he is teamed with undefeated middleweight champion Kelly Robinson (Eddie Murphy), who is slated to fight in Budapest where suspected Stealth thief, arms dealer and boxing fan Arnold Gundars (Malcolm McDowell) is throwing a party in honor of the boxers. Scott uses cool spy equipment to encourage the egotistical Robinson to work with him. Initially at odds with each other, the two eventually bond as they're chased through Budapest by Gundar's henchmen, using spy tools and street smarts to foil the bad guys. To complicate matters, Scott has a crush on a sexy agent, Rachel (Famke Janssen), who may or may not have her own agenda. Gary Cole plays superstar agent Carlos, the envy of the other agents and the guy with the coolest spy toys. Directed by Betty Thomas (28 DAYS, DR. DOOLITTLE), the film is loosely based on the 1960s television series of the same name starring Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. [More]

If I Spy were funny (enough) or exciting (enough) then it would be fairly simple to forgive the financial extortion it’s trying to reap from the moviegoing public.

Apparently the Hollywood studios can no longer be bothered to actually watch the old TV shows they are ripping off.

Thomas trudges through the film's action sequences with such obvious disinterest that when Wilson turns from a lackluster fireball to quip, 'Whoa, that was a big explosion,' you really know he's putting us on.

With large portions shot on ugly digital video rather than film stock, the movie frequently looks like a washed out old videotape.

I Spy is ample reminder that memorable comedy is, in its own way, as tricky to pull off as a good party.

An overblown clunker full of bad jokes, howling cliches and by-the-numbers action sequences.

A sometimes very funny but mostly banal action-comedy that has only superficial links to its 1960s source.

Owen Wilson...has officially refined his act into saleable Hollywood shtick.

It's been 20 years since 48 Hrs. made Eddie Murphy a movie star and the man hasn't aged a day. But his showboating wise-cracker stock persona sure is getting old.

An uninspired buddies-from-hell comedy with a theater sound system so loud some punch lines are muffled.

Cut from the same mold as celluloid trash like Bad Company...[but] both Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson are genuinely funny.

Spy is one of those films in which so little thought went into the story, the characters often whine about not being able to keep things straight. But consider this: It took four people to pen a story that doesn't make a lick of sense.

A harmless, though instantly forgettable and utterly brainless, diversion...a popcorn movie that isn't terribly good, but is better than it might have been.
