Heiko Kalmbach’s video portrait of the German-born, London-based photographer frustrates because of the way it hovers between the esoteric and the quotidian.

He became famous in the early 1990s with apparently spontaneous images from the club and party scene, but he was soon regarded as more than just a chronicler of the techno generation. In 2000, he was the first photographer and the first foreigner to receive Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize. Kalmbach followed Tillmans at work for four years, creating a portrait based on observation and interviews with the artist, rather than expert testimonials. If One Thing Matters conveys a vibrant impression of what drives Tillmans, and of how he negotiates the global art scene without losing his sensitivity to the experiences of everyday life. --© Anthology Archives [More]

Reviews for If One Thing Matters: A Film About Wolfgang Tillmans
A dull, meandering, lazy and poorly-edited documentary that fails to be captivating and insightful. [U]ltimately a missed opportunity.
It’s like choking down 72 minutes of a stranger’s unedited home videos, only without the occasional cute kiddie or pet to lighten the tedium.
The risk of such hands-off filmmaking is that the narrative itself can become mired in the mundane; there’s little that happens here to shed light on the way this renowned shutterbug works or thinks.
