Lucas Gives a Few "Star Wars" & "Indy 4" Hints (and Calls "Spidey 3" Silly!)
by Scott Weinberg | May 10, 2007
Discuss Article
The man who created Jar Jar Binks has called the third "Spider-Man" flick "silly."

While talking to Fox News, George Lucas talked around "Indy 4" a little more. Regarding Karen Allen? Can't say. Sean Connery? Lips are sealed. Plot details? Hah, don't make me laugh.

Regarding the hotly-anticipated "Star Wars" TV shows, the animated one will feature several familiar characters, only they'll be voiced by different actors. The live-action (mini?) series "won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters ... They will be other people of that milieu." Still no word on which network will land the series, but I doubt George will have a problem finding bidders. (Gotta be Fox, right?)

And when he was asked about "Spider-Man 3," this is what Mr. Lucas had to say: ""It's silly. It's a silly movie ... There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there? ... People thought 'Star Wars' was silly, too ... But it wasn't." The reporter mentions a "wink" as he says the last part, which is a good thing. Because I actually kinda LIKE the "Star Wars" prequels, and even I think chunks of those flicks are pretty silly.

Hmmm ... Although I agree with Lucas about Spidey 3, it sounds like he has been on the ice planet of Hoth for too long. The prequels were so flawed IMO. So many miss steps in those films. Hopefully the min-series will be better. One can hope.

He's absolutely right about Spider-Man 3, it was wretched in an almost satirical way. And I think the "wink" indicates that he knows his movies weren't too hot, either.

Yeah, Lucas got some cool points for that. But he's being too nice. And while the Star Wars prequels were flawed, they didn't make me want to convert to the darkside like Spiderman 3 did. lol

YEAH, SOME IDIOT.
REG: What has that idiot Lucas ever given us?

XERXES: Star Wars?

REG What?

XERXES: Star Wars

REG: Oh. Yeah, yeah. He did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.

COMMANDO: Teamed up with Spielberg to give us Indiana Jones.

LORETTA: Oh, yeah, Indiana Jones, remember how dull archeologists used to be?

REG: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you Indiana Jones and the Star Wars are two things that the Lucas has given us.

MATTHIAS: And the many new stars such as Harrison Ford that he introduced in American Graffiti

REG: Well, yeah. Obviously new stars from American Graffiti, I mean, the new stars go without saying, don't they? But apart from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, American Graffiti and Harrison Ford--

COMMANDO: Industrial Light and Magic that designed E.T.

XERXES: The movie THX 1138.

COMMANDOS: Huh? Heh? Huh...

COMMANDO #2: Yes and the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park

COMMANDOS: Ohh...

REG: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.

COMMANDO #1: And the THX sound

COMMANDOS: Oh, yes. Yeah...

FRANCIS: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, if he didn’t give us THX sound. Huh.

COMMANDO: Digital movies.

LORETTA: Camera stabilizers. Remember how shakey movies were before Empire Strikes back?

REG: All right, but apart from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, the new stars from American Graffiti such as Harrison Ford, Industrial Light and Magic that created E.T and the Jurassic Park Dinosaurs, THX 1138, Digital movies, THX sound, the movie camera stabilizers from Empire Strikes back, what has George Lucas ever done for us?

XERXES: He gave us many great Saturday afternoons at the movies with our kids.

Well said woger! After your entertaining parody from The Life of Brian, I think I'll watch it tonight. One hell of a funny movie and your parody just proves how talented both Lucas and Monty Python are.

Dude, I thought Spidey 3 was great
I didn't see any difference in quality between the last film and the previous 2. I'm planning on going to see it again, while its in theatres. Lucas is just sore b/c the goofy parts in Spidey 3 were actually funny, whereas the goofy parts w/ Jar Jar were mostly painful to watch.

LOL Shake. You're absolutely right.

FOX will buy the Star Wars TV series and then cancel it after one season. They are the absolute worst at cancelling GOOD TV shows. It's premature to call this TV series good, but let us hope that it is and that FOX won't buy it.

I don't see Lucas as an idiot by any means. The man has achieved a lot, and he is involved in so many movies that I love. I nominated him for the RT hall of fame this last time around. But I found a heck of a lot of comparisons between Spidey 3 and Episode 1 and Episode 2. Given that of his last three films, two have been on par with or worse than Spidey 3, he probably shouldn't have said what he said. What he said was true, but he should have realized the irony in him saying it.

When it comes to calling another movie silly, that makes George Lucas a hypocrite. Just when it comes to call another movie silly if the first two prequels were.

wow, i didn't know George Lucas was hanging around lindsay lohan cuz...he's obviously high on something. he can't even call spongebob "silly" after crapping all over his best asset, his old trilogy. two things were great about the star wars prequels. ewan mcgregor(who was the only ACTOR in the d3mn thing) and darth maul. and he wasn't even supposed to be in the movie originally. Lucas, wipe the powder off your nose, get sober...and make actual movies. maybe THEN you can critique movies that blow your sh3t out of the water.

revenge of the sith was one of the funniest(cuz it was SO bad) flops of crap i've ever seen. i can't make it through that stupid Mace/Anakin/Emperor scene without laughing my @ss off. if he wrote that sober...he needs to sell off his copyrights and never be around a set ever again.

RT: Hey it's George Lucas! Let's ask him a quick question!! Hey George!!

George Lucas: Yea, what's up?

RT: What did you think about Spiderman 3, wasn't it just awesome ZOMG!!!??

George Lucas: It's silly. It's a silly movie ... There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?

RT: Wow George I never looked at it that way... but what about all the people who think YOUR MOVIES are SILLY!!???

George Lucas: ... People thought 'Star Wars' was silly, too ... But it wasn't."

RT: WOw, I never looked at it like that, I did think Star Wars was silly but I never stopped to think, hey, but it wasnt.

George just fooling around
Something tells me George was having some fun with the reporter when he was asked that question, especially since the article said he winked afterwards. He was obviously trying to act like we all did when the prequels came out, and poking fun at himself in the process. I'll wager George Lucas has no real opinion on the Spider-Man movies one way or another. He never struck me as the type to to just blurt out harsh judgment about other films.

But for the record, in my own opinion, Spider-Man 3 is Gone With the Wind compared to the Star Wars prequels.

If he was sober when he wrote that Mace/Anakin scene, then maybe he needs to stop writing sober. If he was high when he dissed Spidey, then maybe he should get more of what he was on at the time. ;-)
