Summary

It's still about a year away from gracing our neighborhood air-conditioned palaces of cinema, but the gossip train has been running full-speed on "Indiana Jones 4" for months, and it shows no sign of slowing down -- from Quint at Ain't It Cool News comes word that maybe, just maybe, "Indy 4"'s storyline will bring the series full circle. It's funny how people freaked when they heard Area 51 would be in this movie. This makes it seem like there's a decent reason for it. People need to wait until they get more facts before they jump to conclusions.

I'd rather they left it open ended. Especially if it's just going to be a passing opening sequence. Like the cross of Coronado in Last Crusade. Part of the appeal of the ending of Ark was it was so open ended.

Yeah, I'm betting that this is nothing more than a big, flashy action set piece designed to open the movie with a bang. Haven't we heard several rumors already that the movie opens with a big sequence of Indy fighting Russians at Area 51? I'm guessing this will have as much to do with the main plot as Indy grabbing that little fat gold guy from the tomb at the beginning of Raiders. It'll be a fun way to kick off the movie, but it won't have much bearing on the plot. Though, if you're looking for patterns, generally the Indy movies use these opening action sequences to introduce us to important supporting characters. So maybe we'll be introduced to Abner Ravenwood or maybe a villain. Just as the openings of Raiders, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade introduced us to Belloq, Willie and Dr. Jones, Sr. respectively.
... So I'm betting that the Ark will essentially be making a cameo in the first ten minutes of the movie before we settle down and get on with the main quest of the story. Whatever that may be ...

But Abner Ravenwood is dead by the time Raiders takes place, and this one is in the 1950's. Then again, if Hurt really is Ravenwood then this lends credence to this being the opening action piece: it would be a flashback, ala Last Crusade.

Who cares if they go for the Lost Ark and make it full circle?????..Lets just give Indy the classic rope so he whips some serious ass...YEAHHH!!!..I just hope they have an interesting story which involves really wild adventures like the previous films and especially the Last Crusade.

The thing with Indiana Jones is the movies really were independent story lines. There was a little allusion to prior adventures, but each movie stood on it's own.

"Coming full circle" just wouldn't do it for me. I wouldn't mind it dealing with Area 51 and they inadvertently stumble across the Ark while in search of something else.....THAT would work.

But having the Arc be the focus (again) would be yawn inspiring at the least.

Hopefully this isn't true.

Did anyone actually watch The Last Crusade. They were only immortal as long as they kept drinking constantly from the cup, which was lost with their immortality at the end of the movie.

They were immortal as long as they didn't cross the great seal. It didn't have to do with constantly drinking from the cup. If they stayed there, and didn't cross the seal, they would be immortal.

I think it is fair to say that there is a little bit of ambiguity left at the end of Last Crusade. The movie only said 'whoever drinks from the cup of Christ shall have everlasting life' or something like that. He didn't have to keep drinking from it (or if he did the movie didn't mention it) and the seal only had to do with the actual holy grail not passing it, not eternal life. At least that's what I got from it.

See I thought the cup just couldn't pass the seal hence the cave in and I took the fact that you had to constantly keep drinking from it as an explanation as to why the guardian knight aged. If all you had to do was drink once that's pretty shabby immortality if it only lasts 700 years whereas its very believable that after 700 years in a cave in the desert even the most devout person might have moments of doubt and not drink for a few days with the thought to just giving up the ghost or he was a pretty crappy guard and wandered into town on the weekends to whore it up and get snockered. Which I find less believable cause who's not gonna notice a guy in crusader armor wandering around their middle eastern market? Bottom line the immortality the cup provided was pretty restricted and wouldn't help Indy or his old man not to age.

See but if you go with the one drink theory and discount the seal theory, why did the knights brothers die of extreme old age? Shouldn't they have gone on living forever?

I don't mind the idea of the Ark being a story element to bring the franchise full circle. It's the whokle AREA 51 thing that kinda kills it a little. The whole area 51 thing is a tired dog.

HEY GUYS!! When Indy and his dad left and crossed the seal, they left their immortality there. Example...the knights brother..remember?? Indy found his sarcophagus under the old church/library...you know he had drank from the grail...yet he died, because he was not still in the grotto. The knight that WAS still there had not ever left, therefore he was immortal. If you remember, he waved to Indy...still alive. The only way Indy could have kept his immortality was to stay with the knight. So, the everlasting life offered by the Grail was badly flawed, in my opinion, due to denying your freedom. The knight wanted nothing more than for Indy to vanquish him, so he could leave that place and die in peace. People....try to get the underlying themes of these flicks....all of them have one at least, altho you have to really pay close attention to most to get them.

This makes sense if you think about it.

They've already said that the film will take place in the 50's, to account for Indy's aging.

And what was going on in the 50's?

The American versus Russian race... cold war, if you will.

It only makes sense that they would work the Ark into the story.
