Spike Lee to Stage "Riots" for Universal
by Scott Weinberg | December 08, 2006
Discuss Article
Spike Lee's not sitting around waiting for the reported "Inside Man" sequel to get rolling; along with producer Brian Grazer, Lee will helm "L.A. Riots" for Universal. The project will be based, of course, on the 1992 L.A. riots that occurred after the acquittal of the cops who beat up Rodney King.

From Variety: "Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are teaming with helmer Spike Lee on "L.A. Riots," a drama framed around the racially charged April 1992 riots. John Ridley will write the script. Brian Grazer will produce.

Lee, who's also developing an "Inside Man" sequel for the studio and Grazer, said the goal is to have a script in front of prexy Donna Langley before business closes for the holidays. Project could well be his next feature and shoot next year.

The riots, which followed the acquittal by a white jury of four police officers who were videotaped beating black motorist Rodney King, caused the death of 55 people, thousands of injuries and close to $1 billion in damage."

Good choice for a director- I'm not usually one to think that a director should always be about race issues, but Spike Lee works.

There's tons of video footage from the actual riots. If you turned on the tv back then it was constant news coverage. Do we really need a movie?

I can't wait to see this movie. I heard Spike Lee was actually able to cast Satan himself for the only white role in the film. You know, the guy who got beaned with the brick?

Man, Satan has been miscast then. He should be like one of the jurors or something. Not a poor, innocent white man. "This movie's going to suck now."

you're thinking of reginald denny. the man who was stupid enough to let people drag him out of a SEMI and beat him repeatedly with a brick. if it were me, i would have ran them over, satan or not.

I hope Spike shows footage of those cowardly white cops beating King. I also hope Spike shows footage of white thugs who were ripping off shop owners according to LA Times Mexicans and Whites lead the pack in crimes and arrests..
