Vocalist-guitarist Ian MacKaye, who also fronted the seminal punk band Minor Threat, is an ideological hero to many--his anti-major label stance and belief in a DIY, independent music scene continues to be an inspiration. Since their formation in 1987, Fugazi's remarkable "career" has been tracked on film by photographer-turned-filmmaker Jem Cohen, himself part of the local punk scene. INSTRUMENT is a collection of Cohen and Fugazi's audiovisual collaborations; shot over a period of 10 years on Super 8, 16mm, and video, the film is a visually stunning compilation of concerts, landscapes, interviews, and studio footage.
