"The Guide" Reigns Supreme During Its Debut Weekend
by Scott Weinberg | May 02, 2005
Discuss Article
The long-awaited movie version of Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" ended up in first place during its inaugural weekend, raking in a healthy (but not staggering) $21.7 million from just over 3,300 theaters. Hanging on in second place was last weekend's "The Interpreter" which pulled in a fairly impressive $14.2m in its second weekend. Debuting in third place was ...

the Ice Cube action thriller "xXx: State of the Union," which made a relatively disappointing $13.7m in over 3,800 theaters. Rounding out the Top 5 were "The Amityville Horror" with $8.1m ($55m total) and the Matthew McConaughey adventure flick "Sahara" with $6m ($57.1m total). Total box office is down from the same time last year, but that's due to change once the Summer Movie Season gets started in full swing. Next week's challengers are the horror remake "House of Wax," the Ridley Scott epic "Kingdom of Heaven," and the racially-charged drama "Crash." For more info on the past weekend's box office, have a look at the Rotten Tomatoes Box Office page.

XXX2 is quite disappointing compared to the originals $44.5M opening.

I was expecting Hitchhiker's Guide to do significantly better, considering all the hype. I guess there weren't any big name stars...

Nah, I think it just wasn't interesting to many people. I liked the movie though.

An average Disney movie. On par with Haunted Mansion.

No big surprises here. Hitchiker's guide was only okay but I'm happy to see it getting so many moviegoers.

I hope Hitchhiker's does well domestically, but where it will really earn is in the UK, at least for the first couple weeks. I don't know how well the humor will translate to other overseas markets, but I sure hope it earns enough to warrant a sequel.

I also hope it warrants a sequel, I think Restaurant At The End Of The Universe would really be a funny movie. I don't necessarily mind if the other books (which I loved as well) are made into movies, I just think Restaurant would be great.

Straight to video sequel at best?
This won't do $100 million domestically, so the chances of them dumping another wad of cash on a sequel that most likely won't make as much as it's predecessor is unlikely.

Hitchhiker's Guide was incredible in some spots and downright muddled and odd in others... However It's a solid good scifi comedy and if it's successful maybe we'll see the RED DWARF movie actually greenlit! Smeg yeah!
