Next Up for Marvel: "Captain America"

Already off to a great start (we hope) with "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk," the Marvel Machine is about to get rolling on their next heroic movie. Namely, "Captain America."

Marvel man Kevin Feige spoke from the set of "Iron Man," and he indicated that Cap will be the next movie to roll off the assembly line. They haven't announced a director just yet, but they do have screenwriter David Self ("The Haunting," "Thirteen Days," "Road to Perdition") working on the project. The producer also mentions that the movie will probably be half modern-day and half period piece.

Also in the Marvel pipeline are: "Sub-Mariner," "Thor," "Punisher 2" (yes, still), "Wolverine," and "Magneto."

And yes, there already was a "Captain America" movie, but let's not talk about it.

The only way I would see this film would be if Captain America and the majority of the people in the United States banded together to punish George W. Bush for his crimes against humanity. Captain America could put Bush on trial and make him look dumber than he already is. But leave Bucky out of this please. He is just a poor version of Robin.

Hope this is done right. There is not enough patriotism in our country these days. In an age where kids can get suspended from school for waving the American flag, and yet we encourage the Mexicans to wave there�s, we need something to unify America. The United States needs to be more patriotic.

I think this could be really cool. A little of it would be during WWII and then flash-forward to present day where the Cap comes back. The real question is: Do you want Captain to face someone like the Red Skull, or open up a can of worms and make him fight overseas against Al Qaeda and stuff. I think it would be pretty cool to see him in Iraq kickin' ass but then it would probably cause global outrage or something.

We do talk about politics here; it is inevitable. An Inconvenient Truth anyone? Sicko? Death of a President? Jesus Camp? And those are just off the top of my head.

Captain America, like it or not, makes a political statement. He represents the spirit of America. These days, half the country believes that the spirit of America is best represented by fighting terrorists and insurgents. The other half believes that the spirit of America is best represented by protesting and speaking out against that fight, against military atrocities, and against the American empire. The truth is neither; it is probably closer to both. That's why making a Captain America movie will be insanely hard. That's why the comic book version is dead right now. Unless one manages to encapsulate BOTH these impulses in the same movie, half of the country is going to hate it. To use the Team America lingo, if you go to either extreme, Captain America ends up looking like a P***y or a d**k.

However, one way around this would be to go the period piece route. Nobody these days thinks that fighting the Nazis was a bad idea. Well, except for Nazis. However, they make up a relatively small percentage of the population.

I like the idea of half-period piece half modern. I always thought the man out of time angle was one of the most interesting aspects of Cap. Plus it'll provide some much needed comedic moments. Can you imagine someone from the greatest generation viewing Paris Hilton for the first time without 60 years of gradual erosion of good taste as a buffer? Plus to whoever said Cap would be too devisive in our current climate, read some of the Vietnam era and newer comics. That's one of the things I really appreciate about him. No matter how screwed up or devided we are as a culture I can always find common ground with Captain America. It's real genius on the part of the writers thru the years. Probably has something to do with the iconography of the character. Who's going to come out in direct opposition to Captain America? It would be the political equivalent of yelling "I'll tell ya what's wrong with Jesus" in the middle of the Vatican.
