Although some will predictably succumb to Gray’s overly kinetic and slick-looking heist caper, this stylized action-packed robbers flick fails to steal anything worth value within this repetitive genre.

The plan was flawless... the job was executed perfectly... the escape was clean. The only threat mastermind thief Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) never saw coming was from a member of his own crew. After pulling off an amazing gold bullion heist from a heavily guarded palazzo in Venice, Italy, Charlie and his gang -- inside man Steve (Edward Norton), computer genius Lyle (Seth Green), wheelman Handsome Rob (Jason Statham), explosives expert Left-Ear (Mos Def) and veteran safecracker John Bridger (Donald Sutherland) -- can't believe it when one of them turns out to be a double-crosser. Now the job isn't about the payoff, it's about payback!
Enter Stella (Charlize Theron), a beautiful nerves-of-steel safecracker, who joins Charlie and his former gang when they follow the backstabber to California, where they plan to re-steal the gold by tapping into Los Angeles' traffic control system, manipulating signals and creating one of the biggest traffic jams in L.A. history!
A contemporary update of Paramount's 1969 classic, "The Italian Job" features the ever-popular MINI Cooper in state-of-the-art chase scenes down Hollywood's Walk of Fame, through the Metro Rail tunnels and down narrow escape routes only the MINI can go. Full of twists, turns and exciting stunts with armored cars, motorcycles and helicopters, this action-packed thrill-ride takes audiences on wild curves they'll never see coming. -- © Paramount Pictures

Reviews for The Italian Job
Energetic and lean, beautifully shot and well-acted, "The Italian Job" is a caper whose hip style is generated almost entirely from within.
For a thrilling piece of mouth-breathing summer entertainment, this is one of the better rides you will find.
In this mega-boys' movie, Theron makes Stella sharper and more complicated than any of them.
Solid direction by F. Gary Gray, a scintillating cast of supporting players and plenty of screen time for everyone's favorite little engine that could -- the MINI Cooper -- all push The Italian Job above and beyond typical remake requirements.
The Italian Job” is a slick well-done smart remake and well worth your time to see.
A tricked-out remake of a heist flick that was already flat and formulaic in 1969.
A slickly-made tongue-in-cheek heist movie with a marvelous cast and nifty stunts.
A superior entry in the exhausting oeuvre of genre classics given a slick spit-and-polish for the next generation (think 'Ocean’s Eleven') — if that’s your bag, shift your brain into first (but not neutral) and enjoy.
Every once in a while, a film comes along that is just so much pure fun that I kind of hate to see it end. This is one of them.
Wide-open absurdity would've helped; instead, there's a clotting of musical interludes and a general air of stoic grit.
About as unremarkable as a big budget special effects and car chase-filled movie can be.
. . . a film designed for dispassionate enjoyment, a summer distraction that doesn’t quite leave you feeling like you were thieved of your nine bucks but also feels like a shallow return on your investment.
Even adults need a good car chase every now and then, a service this well-made piece of popcorn fluff is more than happy to provide.
When an armored truck vanishes on Hollywood Boulevard, it's a nifty metaphor for the way this relatively unheralded flick is likely to steal millions in box-office gold from under the noses of such glamorous competitors as 'X2' and 'Matrix'...
Let us now ponder the allure of the star of this movie: The new Mini Cooper.

Sure, some people are in it for the money. We're here for the fun! Go, watch The Italian Job, and on the way home pick up a six-pack of MINI Coopers. They'll fit in the closet
Director F. Gary Gray delivers a thoroughly enjoyable movie with engaging characters and fast-paced action sequences involving almost every form of transportation possible.
