The son of legendary director John Huston and brother to Academy Award winner Angelica Huston, Danny Huston gives a break through performance of a man who presumably has the perfect Hollywood life, but reexamines his existence when a phone call changes everything. As the film opens, Ivan Beckman (DANNY HUSTON), the hottest young talent agent in Hollywood has been found dead. His fellow agents at Media Talent Agency scramble to cover up the ugly story. Rumors quickly spread. Was it a drug overdose? Foul play? Domestic violence? Clients must be placated, especially Don West (PETER WELLER) the gun-toting, misogynist star. At Ivan's funeral, as the coffin slides into the mausoleum wall the movie winds back in time. The audience meets Ivan and discovers how charismatic, attractive and admired he was by all. Ivan flatters and woos his way throughout the business, schmoozing in limousines filled with starlets, sealing a movie deal at one cocktail party, all without ever having read the script. And the ultimate coup, signing superstar Don West, thereby making Ivan king of the agency. In the flurry of congratulatory callers comes a telephone call of a different nature. Ivan learns he has a terminal illness. Ivan spins into a vicious cycle of drugs, girls and more drugs which quickly climaxes at a chilling "orgy" in a penthouse suite, presided over by Don West. Ivan is celebrated as the Prince of Hollywood but ironically is unable to confide in anyone including his family and girlfriend about his fatal condition. -- © 2002 Artistic License Films [More]

The fascination comes in the power of the Huston performance, which seems so larger than life and yet so fragile, and in the way the Ivan character accepts the news of his illness so quickly but still finds himself unable to react.

It's hard to say who might enjoy this, are there Tolstoy groupies out there? It's dark and tragic, and lets the business of the greedy talent agents get in the way of saying something meaningful about facing death

It gets onto the screen just about as much of the novella as one could reasonably expect, and is engrossing and moving in its own right.

Huston nails both the glad-handing and the choking sense of hollow despair.

Captivates as it shows excess in business and pleasure, allowing us to find the small, human moments, and leaving off with a grand whimper.

(Danny Huston gives) an astounding performance that deftly, gradually reveals a real human soul buried beneath a spellbinding serpent's smirk.

A directorial tour de force by Bernard Rose, ivans xtc. is one of this year's very best pictures.
