If you are up for a dark teen comedy, you could do much worse than Jawbreaker.

It's Heathers without the wry wit, Blackboard Jungle sans the fun, Very Bad Things with more ick.

The most unfortunate thing about Jawbreaker has to be its blatant imitation of 1989's vastly superior Heathers.

For all its posturing, and despite an odd cameo by McGowan's fiance, Marilyn Manson, Jawbreaker is missing anything resembling its own sensibility.

If it's a hit, it'll prove teens don't demand a plot that makes sense, characters that seem real or any other movie virtue, except for sexy girls with revealing outfits and bad attitudes.

Lame shock scenes, crucial plot points inserted without setups, and an unsuccessful attempt to exploit the camp value of some actors cast in minor parts are the least of the problems in this black comedy.

Jawbreaker is the kind of film that makes you want to kidnap the director and lock him in a trunk, bound and gagged, so he doesn't make any more movies like this.

Manages to capture the mix of murder and teen social observations, but misses three crucial elements: sharp dialogue, witty characters and the much-needed humor.

Jawbreaker was better the first time it was released. Of course, it was called Heathers back then.
