Jericho: The Movie?
CBS execs working on finding a way to cancel a feature film.
Hang onto your nuts, Jericho fans -- you may need to send them to another media conglomerate before too long.
The CBS series, saved from cancellation by impassioned fans last season -- only to find itself canceled again last week, when it was announced that this week's episode would conclude the show's run -- might resurface on another network...or at a theater near you.
Such is the word from Carol Barbee, executive producer of Jericho, who sat down with SCI FI Wire this week to discuss behind-the-scenes developments at the show since its cast and crew were informed they were being cut loose again. Long story short: Cancellation isn't quite the death sentence it used to be. As Barbee told SCI FI Wire:
I can't really say [much] about specifics, and, ... partially, it's because I'm not the one having those conversations. [CBS] Paramount [Television, which produces the show,] has been pursing it, and our agents have been into that, so, you know, I am pushing those people and coming up with ideas to have those people pursue. There's definitely an Internet series to be had, and we always talked about a graphic novel, and ... a movie. I mean, there are lots of things that I could easily see as a way to continue the story.
As Moviehole's Ramius points out, "At the end of near every series run, someone -- either an 'insider' or someone connected to the show -- lets slip that their show is 'rumored' to be getting the big-screen treatment, and nine times out of ten, said film never happens." Of all the options Barbee mentioned, moving to another network seems the most likely; the Sci Fi Channel and The CW are said to be interested in picking up the show for a third season.
On the other hand, nine times out of ten when a show is canceled, it doesn't end up coming back for another season, so maybe the regular rules don't apply to Jericho -- and CBS Paramount, like any other entertainment company, knows that impassioned fans are a precious commodity in the era of the microculture. Either way, if rumors of an Arrested Development movie can persist for years, don't expect the Jericho whispers to end anytime soon. To read more about the story, follow the links below!

Shatter24 writes: on Mar 27 2008 06:23 AM I hope to see it as a continuing show on another network. A movie could work, but I'm not so sure b/c the shortened season 2 wasn't as good as the first season (too much rushed into the story, though it was still superior to much of what is on tv nowadays). The neat thing about Jericho is that it is a little bit sci-fi, the U.S. attacked by nukes, but very grounded in how it affects a small town and the people in that town. I think that's how it attracts more viewers than the standard sci-fi show. It will be missed. (Reply to this) |

bwozar07 writes: on Mar 27 2008 07:14 AM Jericho is a solid show with a great first season. The second season lagged a lot because a number of interesting concepts were squished into too few episodes but I would love to see it come back with a longer season to explore the 2nd Civil War set up in the finale. reavus4983 writes: on Mar 27 2008 07:15 AM The first few episodes of the show that I saw were not very good. It had all of the ingredients for a canceled show, I wasn't surprised that it didn't last. It was basically an action-packed version of "Everwood": quaint town, melodramatic relationships, and gunfights. The premise was good, so maybe it became better in the end and in the second season, but I had a hard time seeing Lost-comparable quality in the first few episodes. And this is coming from somebody who suffers the tragedy of another cult show: Firefly. That show wasn't canceled for its quality, however, but because Fox is a bad network and only wants teeny boppers as an audience. If only Fox would have brought FIREFLY back for another season after the Browncoats unified like they did! (Reply to this) |

dudemovies writes: on Mar 27 2008 07:42 AM CBS killed the show by putting it on 10pm Tuesdays which has been a death slot for them since Judging Amy left. I believe they call it the Judging Amy curse. It also gave it a crappy lead in, in Big Brother howerver Jericho would fall from BB's rating and even more alarmingly demos. I don't even like Jericho but it could have benefited from a weak 8pm timeslot espically weds @ 8 where it would be the only scripted show. (Reply to this) |

LordVapor writes: on Mar 27 2008 07:51 AM Watched a couple of episodes...only reason i think first season was any good, was because you never really knew what the hell was going on until midway through the season.... I respect the fact that the real fans loved it enough to protest them with nuts. but i just couldnt get into the show. :( (Reply to this) |

nathanpoitras writes: on Mar 27 2008 08:52 AM So people weren't watching it for free, but are expected to pay $12 to see it in a theater, that's the one with Skeet Ulrich right? Good luck with that. (Reply to this) |

sguy78 writes: on Mar 27 2008 09:06 AM Jericho is one of the few shows that I can bring myself to watch on television, including Numb3rs, Lost, and anything on Discovery channel. Everything else on is horrible reality shows or a ridiculous amount of crime dramas. Plus originality is sorely lacking in both movies and television overall with all these remakes. It's unfortunate that Jericho was given the short end of the stick this season, as well as last. There was a mid-season hiatus that killed off their ratings, just like Lost. Lost fortunately already had the benfit of having established a fanbase foothold of two seasons by that point. Jericho did not have that luxury. They were also given a smaller budget with no lead-in and a bad viewing time. I hope another network has the smarts to pick up this show, and not mishandle it the way CBS did. Jericho was a breath of fresh air in a stale Hollywood. (Reply to this) |

vernismaximus writes: on Mar 27 2008 10:27 AM I hope that it does come back, either to tv or film. I enjoyed the show, but I agree with others that said the second season felt rushed. Many of the characters that had integral roles in the first season were basically just extras standing around in the second. With only seven episodes there just wasn't enough time to give everyone their due. The next series of events would have been cool though cause a civil war was predicted at the end. I'd love to see that. I would gladly pay nine dollars to go see it in the theater if it wrapped it all up. (Reply to this) |

Carol Barbee has confirmed that CBS Paramount is trying to sell Jericho to a different network. (CBS Televison Network showed/canceled Jericho, but CBS Paramount is the company that produces Jericho.) There are already some interested networks - Sci Fi, DirectTV, and The CW. The actors are still under contract and the sets are in storage. There is a list of things the fans are being asked to do: Save Jericho Again Campaign We will keep updating this page as information becomes G (Reply to this) |
