Although the animations themselves show a deft lightness of hand that has been much emulated in subsequent decades, the subject matter is often controversial and more than a little shocking. Shorts such as "Little Black Sambo" (included here) are overtly racist, and the Betty Boop features are incredibly sexual for the time. Nevertheless this collection provides some food for thought on the dawning of animated features, and provides an interesting insight into the psyche of early 20th Century civilization. Animators featured include Walt Disney, Emile Cohl, Max Fleischer, Walter Lanz, and many others. [More]
