Total Recall: And the Oscar Goes To...
by Alex Vo | February 20, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Instead of focusing on one hot movie for Total Recall, this week you'll get five. They're a little old now, but I think you'll forgive me -- after all, they're Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood. Back to Article

I just meant that I felt like the Academy totally overlooked "Hairspray." Other than that, there were no other summer tentpole films that were deserving of the mention of "Best Pic," but "Hairspray" definitely did. Had it been released in Nov. or Dec. I think it would have stood a better chance.

And please, Atonement-lovers, I'm here to discuss movies. I'm totally open to hearing why this movie works for you. I really want to know because I don't get its appeal at all. The damn thing felt overly manipulative in the end. I'm still angry about it, but a worthy Atonement-defender could assuage my ire.

I would go with either Gone Baby Gone, Once or Reign Over Me. Oh wait...

I would be fine with NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, ATONEMENT, or MICHAEL CLAYTON winning. I would go mad if Juno won. The most overrated film of the year. The dialogue is so annoying and tedious after the first ten minutes of the film. None of the characters get any chance to show their versatilityand there is no life changing moment or "epiphany" for any of them. THERE WILL BE BLOOD should win, but I think NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN will.

I would say the dialogue tried to be funny in the first 20 minutes in JUNO that mostly fell flat, but then developed into a really good movie(not an oscar worthy movie). I also think MICHAEL CLAYTON is definately not overrated.

I can't believe that I just saw a comparison between Juno and Annie Hall. What an insult to Woody Allen.

I hope There Will Be Blood wins. It's everything that movies should be.

Come to think of it...would Once qualify as foreign? I thought that they filmed it in Ireland. If it coulda, it shoulda.

Juno is definitely overrated.

Michael Clayton got this far because of its controversial topic.

Atonement has its fair share of flaws.

No Country of Old Men is near perfect. (Just had a weird third quarter)

Haven't seen "There will be blood".

(But just looking at the trailer, there is no way in hell that the best actor nod will not go to Danny Day Lewis)

It might be a bad thing if Crash was actually a good movie.

Not to be a dick, but Juno and Knocked Up should not be mentioned in the same breath. Knocked Up was a consumer movie and nothing more, whereas Juno is a more respectable work of art that just happens to appeal to a wide audience

Clayton and Juno have got undeserving hype. Instead, Zodiac should have been included for sure, and the other slot should go to either Sweeny Todd or Into the Wild. Now that would make a real solid best picture list!

why are you guys SO argumentative on the Oscars? simply put, its a popularity contest and because of that...the "best" movie or "best actor/actress" doesn't always win. honestly, in recent years some people(most notabley Halle Berry) didn't even deserve to be nominated. i stopped paying attention to it a few years ago anyway because simply put, its not based on ACTUAL talent in the movie, its based on who's more popular at the time. don't we have Cosmo and Maxim Magazine for that anyway?? its very needless to get irritated time and again when DESERVING actors(his name is Christian Bale...NOMINATE HIM) constantly get ignored. to me, the Oscars are now as big a joke as the Grammys and the fact that people still are in aw of it is funny to me.

Juno? As best picture? That'd be even worse than Crash. Clearly not a best picture contender. Shouldn't have even been nominated.

I guess you Juno supporters saw a different film than me. You're taking crazy pills. It was a film for ADD youth. It jumped around like mad, didn't really tell you who Mark and Vanessa were. Paulie was on screen a criminally short amount of team. It was SERIOUSLY flawed. Sure, it's a cute little film. But it is also at times pretentious and juvenile. Yeah, I know, it's ABOUT a juvenile. But when that juvenile speaks like a 30-year-old aging scenester, the film itself should be equally mature. It ain't.

It's a fun, fine little film...but best picture? Good god, if it wins, it's truly only the money (and the gasping, desperate attempts by the Academy to stay "relevant" with those "hip" kids that loved Juno) that matters.

Into the Wild really deserved to be nominated. But I guess that would have made this year's festivities too male oriented.

I vote for There will be blood.

Michael Clayton is over-rated except for Tom Wilkinson's performance. Otherwise I hope it's snubbed.

I'm very glad American Gangster didn't make the cut. Such a dissapointment. Could have been so good. . .

shut up ragalar.

I like There Will Be Blood but i think No Country deserves it. I can't wait for that to come out on DVD so i can see it again. I definitely agree though Zodiac deserved several noms, that movie was amazing. Also call me crazy but i really liked Sunshine, maybe it could have gotten best visual nomination or something.

Perhaps; I didn't see the movie and probably won't. The academy has dialed down its love for the musical recently though. Dreamgirls missed a nomination last year and both Sweeney Todd and Hairspray missed nominations this year.

The movie I liked the least was There Will Be Blood. I'd vote for No Country For Old Men or Atonement.
