Shimizu is obviously impatient with dull exposition and wants us to get straight to the good scary stuff.

Her discovery unleashes a horrible evil which baffles police investigators, who find that a whole series of people have gone missing from this particular house. Further investigation leads to Izutni Toyama (Misa Uehara), a former detective who handled the case of a man who murdered his wife in the house, but whose son was never found. But when the angry "Ju-On" spirit of vengeance that has infected the house reaches beyond its boundaries to kill Toyama and his daughter, Rika realizes that the horror is spreading. Worse, unless something is done about it, she feels she may become the angry spirit's next victim! Reviews for Ju-On: The Grudge
Shimizu seems to suggest that being confronted by the undeniable reality of the supernatural would obliterate not just our judgment but the very foundation of our lives...
Ju-on has the ability to shoot chills up, down and, well, sideways across a viewer's spine.
Watching this is as likely to set the hairs on the back of your neck dancing the dead-girl shuffle as much as any film in recent memory.
Even if you have no idea what the devil is going on in Ju-on, it holds up as a finely crafted little freakout movie.
While the film wouldn't go on my list of horror classics -- the acting is often stagey, the effects are cheesy, and one particular groaning floorboard sound effect is drastically overused -- it is an intriguing addition to the field.
Preys on your imagination, toying with your darkest feelings, and, in the process, it gets under your skin.
I wasn't scared of this movie because I was too annoyed to be scared.
Ridiculous. Unbelievable. Unintentionally funny. It might as well be a parody of a horror film.
The fragmented tale is a tangled mess, and the actors have no characterizations to play, apart from shrieking cowardice.
Creepy, and if you like your horror eerie but not sopped in blood, Ju-On fits the bill. It is also 15 minutes too long.
Lifeless, lumbering, and mindless--good for a monster, not so good for a monster movie.
[Ju-on: the Grudge does what a horror movie is supposed to do – scare you!
Unless the viewer has the patience and time for multiple viewings, "Ju-On: The Grudge" appears to dispense with sense, but it never lets up on the chills
The shocks are inventive and frequently unnerving ... and the script's too intricate for the contradictions to be anything but deliberate.
Director Shimizu fiills his spook quotient in unexpected, everyday situations.
