Borrowing heavily from leftfield genre spin-offs like True Romance, it's no wonder this misfire was on the shelves for so long.

Considered too sensitive for mob work, but unable to find a regular job, Matty finally gets a chance to join his dad's organization when he agrees to arrange transport of half a million dollars across the country. When it winds up lost in a small Montana town, Matty and his assortment of tough-guy pals (played by Andrew Davoli, Seth Green, and Vin Diesel) are forced to fly out there, tangle with the locals, and find the money before their disappointed elders come to get them, guns blazing. KNOCKAROUND GUYS features stylishly washed-out, gritty cinematography and benefits from a refreshing lack of the expected "city folk stranded in a small town" gags. Instead it's a tale of identity crisis-plagued boys blasting their blood-soaked way into manhood, with the dependable Diesel easily stealing the prize with his turn as Matty's philosophic brawler pal. John Malkovich--sporting one of the weirdest Brooklyn accents in gangster film history--is also memorable as one of the older mobsters. It's the directorial debut for the screenwriting team of Brian Koppelman and Sid Levein, who before this penned the script for ROUNDERS. [More]

Reviews for Knockaround Guys
...wannabe mob sons in a hick town milling around—buying beers and showing off their leather jackets.
What sounds like a formula for freakish violence and a torrent of incessant expletives is in fact a stylish mobster film that stands out due to some very inventive casting.
It takes itself very seriously, exploring such deep issues as "our dads are big gangsters, why aren't we? Our life sucks."
These Guys won't make anyone forget GoodFellas, but the picture boasts a handful of solid performances, a few genuinely clever lines and a promising premise.
An interesting twist on the Mafia genre, really a rite of passage story.
The first-time directors previously penned the screenplay Rounders, and while their attention to setting and detail in both films is commendable, their development of character and storyline could stand some improvement.
Putting the faces of hot young stars on the same old parts doesn't make the movie any fresher.
Taken as a new-school mobster B-movie matinee, the film has its merits...But this isn’t a picture that will stand up to much scrutiny.
What keeps this turkey from reaching even a minimum level of entertainment is the studied, melodramatic tone that the filmmakers achieve.
While certainly no revelation, Knockaround Guys isn’t anywhere near as lousy as the hype would have you believe.
Real gangsters often love gangster films, but it's a safe bet that Knockaround Guys won't be on their all-time hit list.
Demonstrates what it could be when Noonan struts on-screen with his careful reptilian gait.
The execution is lazy enough for a straight-to-cable title and we’re left yawning awaiting for all the principle players to arrive in bumble**** so we can finally have a shootout.
The lack of humor pervading the final reels lays bare the unoriginal workings of a plot that could have been camouflaged, or at least forgiven, taken less seriously
You can't fault the actors, but we've been over this ground so many times that our tolerance for one more deadpan, low-life comedy has been all but exhausted.
No less stale than the many derivative crime thrillers that flood the direct-to-video market.
Knockaround Guys works well when it tries to be funny, and falls flat on its face when the bullets fly.
