Considered too sensitive for mob work, but unable to find a regular job, Matty finally gets a chance to join his dad's organization when he agrees to arrange transport of half a million dollars across the country. When it winds up lost in a small Montana town, Matty and his assortment of tough-guy pals (played by Andrew Davoli, Seth Green, and Vin Diesel) are forced to fly out there, tangle with the locals, and find the money before their disappointed elders come to get them, guns blazing. KNOCKAROUND GUYS features stylishly washed-out, gritty cinematography and benefits from a refreshing lack of the expected "city folk stranded in a small town" gags. Instead it's a tale of identity crisis-plagued boys blasting their blood-soaked way into manhood, with the dependable Diesel easily stealing the prize with his turn as Matty's philosophic brawler pal. John Malkovich--sporting one of the weirdest Brooklyn accents in gangster film history--is also memorable as one of the older mobsters. It's the directorial debut for the screenwriting team of Brian Koppelman and Sid Levein, who before this penned the script for ROUNDERS. [More]

Even when the film turns serious, the filmmakers can't make up their minds about what kind of movie they're making.

A promising story that's been sloppily put to film.

While certainly no revelation, Knockaround Guys isn’t anywhere near as lousy as the hype would have you believe.

If the movie itself doesn't know if it wants to be funny or dramatic, how am I supposed to make the distinction?

Knockaround Guys seems to think that it's a character study, or maybe an all-in-the-Family portrait on par with The Sopranos, but it has no twistiness or intrigue.

Taken as a new-school mobster B-movie matinee, the film has its merits...But this isn’t a picture that will stand up to much scrutiny.

If Oscar had a category called Best Bad Film You Thought Was Going To Be Really Awful But Wasn't, Guys would probably be duking it out with The Queen of the Damned for the honor.

A pint-sized 'Goodfellas' designed to appeal to the younger set, it's not a very good movie in any objective sense, but it does mostly hold one's interest.

...the lack of a fluid storyline prevents the film from ever becoming much more than a showcase for some really fine acting and a lot of clever dialogue.

Guys say mean things and shoot a lot of bullets. Some of the characters die and others don't, and the film pretends that those living have learned some sort of lesson, and, really, nobody in the viewing audience cares.
