Max Makowski Knows Kung Fu
Warner Bros. seeking young grasshoppers.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are still bringing Kung Fu to the big screen, but the Hughes brothers won't be behind the camera -- ComingSoon reports that Max Makowski has been tapped to helm the project.
The movie, of course, is based on the 1972-75 ABC series, which starred David Carradine in the role of his career, a 19th-century Shaolin monk named Kwai Chang Caine who wanders the American Old West in search of his long-lost half brother while fleeing the Chinese emperor's assassins...and fighting for justice.
The Kung Fu film will be a prequel to the series, ostensibly meaning it'll focus on the lessons taught young Kwai Chang Caine by blind Master Po, the wizened old man seen in flashbacks during the TV show. The script, according to ComingSoon's report, was written by Howard Friedlander and Ed Spielman (who wrote for and created the original series, respectively), then rewritten by Cory Goodman.
But who's going to play the lead role? Heck, maybe you are. From the article:
A new casting call has gone out looking for the lead role, which is described as: "Male, 20-35. A handsome mix of East (Chinese/Asian) meets West (American). A man with the emotional capacity of a young Clint Eastwood. Charismatic and charming, Caine was raised by Shaolin monks after his mother's murder and became a highly skilled fighter. In addition to being a strong actor with the right look, the actor for this role should be athletic and although not required, some martial arts training, gymnastics or ballet are a plus."
Send in those audition reels, Grasshoppers!

eastern2western writes: on Sep 13 2007 12:56 PM Out of all the requirements for the leading actors. None of it says speaking fluent chinese. Hello, Hollywood, how can u have a leading character who was born in china, raise by the monks till adult hood and does not speak a word of chinese. This remake or reimagination is going to be a bastardize version of chinese culture. (Reply to this) |

nogard46 writes: on Sep 13 2007 03:25 PM Man if this isn't going to be a huge insult fest to Asian Americans I dont know what is. Well the few actors who have the "estern/western" mix includes keanu Reeves, Dean cain, Rob Schnieder and man Brandon Lee whould have been perfect. Man Asian males are so horribly represented in American media, they're either fixing your computers, taking dirty pics of your g/f, or they are doing wacky kung fu on each other. Are we sure its 2007? and not 1887? (Reply to this) |
