Reviews for Lake of Fire
Doesn't quite feel as definitive as the filmmaker intended, although I can't imagine how any film on the subject could get closer than this.
There's a madness to Lake Of Fire, a two-and-a-half hour documentary about abortion in America, that goes hand-in-glove with its staggering achievement.
Lake wants to break through decades of encrusted rhetoric to make us think again. With one slow reveal of Norma McCorvey, a.k.a. 'Jane Roe,' the movie upends all you assumed about this subject.
Along with Kay’s masterful compositions, effulgent black and white cinematography elevates the material over typical documentary filmmaking.
You may not leave the theater having switched sides, but you'll probably respect the other side more, and that in itself would be a victory for human life.
At 152 minutes, his film doesn't seem long, because at every moment something absorbing, disturbing, depressing or infuriating is happening.
No one will have an easy time of it with Lake of Fire, a work of profound anguish centered on the abortion rights debate.
The latest in a long list of hyper-politicized, sensationalistic documentaries that are high on scare tactics and shock value, but low on progressive discourse.
An absorbing doc that punctuates the idea that abortion, legal or banned, is not a black-and-white issue but is in a political gray zone.
It still provides viewers with a lot to think about and may even cause them to look at some of those with opposing views on the subject in a new light.
Tony Kaye (American History X) docu is a powerful mixture of ethical, philosophical, and religious viewpoints about the controversial, divisive abortion debate in the U.S.
Tony (American History X) Kaye's ambitious docu is a powerful mixture of ethical, philosophical, political, and religious viewpoints about the controversial abortion debate in the U.S., aspiring to be a definitive work on the contentious subject.
Viewer opinions about life and death provoked by Lake of Fire are not likely to flip, but they sure will get shaken.
Lives up to its promise of definitiveness...a significant piece of journalism.
it's hard to imagine a more honest and clear-headed documentary that's been made or will be made on the subject of abortion.
Kaye shoots in black and white, a stark reminder of how there is no middle ground when it comes to abortion in America... and also, perhaps, a bit of a cushion against the authenticity of Kaye's harsh vision.
