With a warning from his boss... Set in London, this romantic comedy stars Dustin Hoffman as Harvey Shine, a divorced and haggard jingle-writer quickly aging out of his career and workaholic ways. With a warning from his boss (Richard Schiff) to not bother rushing back, Harvey goes to London, begrudgingly, for his daughter's wedding, fielding that work calls the whole time he's there. When Harvey greets his estranged daughter, Susie (Liane Balaban), it becomes clear just how far away he's grown from his family. The film never spells out in exactly what ways Harvey was a bad father, but it is clear he missed the boat when Susie asks her stepfather (James Brolin) to give her away. As Harvey leaves his heartbreak at the ceremony for an emergency work call, he misses his flight and gets fired. While nursing a whiskey at the airport bar, Harvey bumps into Kate (Emma Thompson), an airport employee escaping her own bad day with a glass of wine and a book. Suddenly taken by Kate's British charm, a tipsy Harvey bombards her with tales of his trouble. This unlikely trading of sob stories leads to lunch, a walk around London, and a day of unexpected romance. Thompson is charming as Kate, a lonely middle-age woman struggling to deal with her mother's constant prying into her life. Despite not having had the best of luck in romance, Kate is an optimist at heart, and it's this spark for life that attracts Harvey and ultimately helps repair his image in his daughter's eyes. Never showy or too ambitious, Joel Hopkins's slow-paced romance twists old clichés to suit a more adult audience. While not groundbreaking in its plot, LAST CHANCE HARVEY is saved by great performances from the always-solid Hoffman and the incredibly charming Thompson, who makes an otherwise familiar story feel fresh. What makes this simple romance watchable is the fine observational comedy.

Undemanding, observant and beautifully performed, this is Richard Curtis-lite with added reassurance: no challenging questions here.

While not the most believable of screen couples, the pair's acting chops mean you won't notice that too much while the plot chugs along at a reasonable pace, helped by some occasionally amusing gags.

This good-natured London-set rom-com for the over-40s is delightfully performed and gently amusing, but it can't shake its need for schmaltz and sentimentality.

A low-key, predictable but no less enjoyable romantic comedy.

Writer/director Joel Hopkins is smart enough to focus entirely on the two lead actors and there is enough veracity in their seasoned faces to keep the drama comfortably on track.

Hoffman’s undimmed star power papers over the script cracks in an otherwise polished vehicle for his and Thompson’s talents.

Originality's thin on the ground...But realism isn't the target here -warm and fuzzy feelings are.

Last Chance Harvey is an absolute gem of a movie and the perfect antidote to all the big budget vehicles that are on release right now. Magical.

Hoffman and Thompson prove you can never be too old to make memories and their romance is certainly one to remember.

Last Chance Harvey is a funny little thing – a perfectly sincere July-to-September romance with barely an ounce of irony in its DNA, just a lot of optimism and good-humoured smiling. It's refreshing, in its unforced way.

Nimble dialogue, a brace of insightful moments and a slightly chocolate-box view of our city, lend ‘Last Chance Harvey’ a warmth and wisdom which outshine the more timeworn elements of the screenplay.

Watching them dance effortlessly through this film is a reminder that two actors at the absolute top of their game can weave magic even in a slightly predictable example of a wholly formulaic genre.

Last Chance Harvey is too lightweight to be annoying, but it's too formulaic to be memorable and too safe to be in any way meaningful.

Both are about one notch off in their impersonation of "ordinary" people – it reminded me of Streep and De Niro in Falling in Love. Nothing offensive about it, apart from its sense of London geography.

It fails to be as likeable, despite being beautifully acted by Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson.

The problem lies in a sloppy screenplay and direction that’s too slick to be credible. Added to that, while Thompson often makes acting look natural, Hoffman these days makes natural look like acting.
