Agnes Varda (CLEO DE 5 A 7, VAGABOND) creates a visually stunning yet essentially tentative world of flowers, sunshine, and eternal love in this sunny evocation of one couple's country life of love and marriage. Francois and Therese and their two children (played by the real life Drouot family) spend their days lounging about, happily working (he as a carpenter, she as a seamstress), sleeping outdoors, and living cozily in their modest house. On a business trip, Francois is instantly smitten by the beautiful Emily, a telephone operator in a neighboring town. Not willing to concede any conflict in loving two women, Francois pursues both his loves in an effort to augment his already overflowing happiness. The color-saturated world of unconditional love begins to crack when Francois realizes he must tell his wife of his affair. Varda injects a subtle, detached, and sly feminism into this tale of love and happiness undone by human error. When Therese is faced with the reality that she is sharing her husband with another woman, the veneer created by Varda's intense evocation of a dream world of love is subverted by the realities of human nature. For Varda, chance is more of a reason people get married than love is.
