Consensus: Just ordinary. LXG is a great premise ruined by poor execution.

Sean Connery stars as Allan Quatermain, the world's greatest adventurer, who leads a legion of superheroes the likes of which the world has never seen, in THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN. Quatermain's extraordinary League is comprised of Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), Dracula vampiress Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), an invisible man Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran), American secret service agent Sawyer (Shane West), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemyng). Richard Roxburgh ("Moulin Rouge") plays the League's enigmatic recruiter, M. The League members are staunch individualists, outcasts in fact, with checkered pasts and singular gifts that have been both blessing and curse. Now they must learn to trust each other and work as a team for the very hope of civilization. With little preparation and no time to lose, they will be transported via Captain Nemo's extraordinary submarine, the Nautilus, to the frontline of defense: Venice, Italy. There, a masked madman known as the Fantom plans to sabotage a conference of world leaders by setting off a domino chain of explosions, sinking the entire city. The threat is catastrophic, the risks are staggering. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has 9 hours to save the world. Based on the acclaimed comic books by Alan Moore ("From Hell") and Kevin O'Neill, the film is directed by Stephen Norrington ("Blade") from a screenplay by James Dale Robinson. Don Murphy ("From Hell", "Natural Born Killers") and Trevor Albert ("Groundhog Day", "Bedazzled") are the producers, and Sean Connery and Mark Gordon ("Saving Private Ryan") are executive producers. The co-producer is Michael Nelson. Principal photography on the 20-week shoot occurred almost entirely in Prague, with additional shooting in Malta and Los Angeles. [More]

One more bloated effects-o-rama lumbering through a formula plot without much zest, imagination or awareness of its own absurdity.

Whether League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is true to the comics upon which it's based, I can't say. On its own, however, this film is very, very ordinary.

Gentlemen may be a better movie than other Connery fantasy-action films like The Avengers, but then again a glass of muddy water looks good to someone just coming in from the desert.

A smart concept that's been dumbed down.

Young boys may appreciate the flick's cool gadgets and gee-whiz sensibility, but fans of Alan Moore's graphic novel will be appalled. The rest of us will just be bored.

swings freely between overwrought psychodrama and overblown fantasy ...The effects here often look like rush jobs...

The CGI's not visually up to 2003 standards and you aren't provided with enough backstory to understand all the nuances.

When a film’s creative decisions are dictated by the marketing department, the extraordinary quickly becomes hum-drum.

Offers some appealing elements -- exceptionally beautiful design, atypical characters, literacy and an intriguing intellectual basis -- that are ultimately engulfed by explosions, effects and an affiliated ponderousness.

Sorry Bruce, Peter and Clark. Your ancestors are back, and their pedigrees are convincing enough for a sequel.

For those of us expecting a smart action film where knowledge of these characters would broaden our movie experience, disappointment looms large.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen may end up being the film that defined the season: underwritten and overwritten, effects-driven, inspired by a comic book and unlikely to drive those on- the-fence audiences back into theaters anytime soon.

That an actor exec produced such a film is a sad commentary on where we stand in early-21st century filmmaking.

...may get pegged as a poor man's `X-Men,' but calling it the serious version of the Ben Stiller superhero spoof `Mystery Men' would be more accurate.
