Like many Iranian films, LIFE AND NOTHING MORE... presents a simple narrative with an ostensibly objective recounting of real events as its base. The director, played by Farhad Kheradmand, learns that the region where he shot his 1987 film WHERE IS THE FRIEND'S HOME? has been struck by a terrible earthquake. Concerned about the safety of his young actors, he sets out with his son Puya to ascertain their survival. Following a thoroughly rural route, the director and his son begin a quest not unlike the one taken by the protagonist in WHERE IS THE FRIEND'S HOME? Non-actors, villagers and locals speak with the director along the way, discussing the disaster and its meaning. While the characters remain uncertain of whether the destination will be reached, Kiarostami creates a compassionate examination of determination as their journey unfolds. [More]

If one thing is evident, it's that Kiarostami enjoys blurring the line between real life and fiction.

So natural are Kiarostami's non-professional actors, that the line between fiction and non-fiction is continually blurred.

The responsibility that Kiarostami feels toward truth combined with the genuine compassion that he displays toward his “characters” makes the film profoundly humanistic.
