She plays Lily Brannel James, a beautiful girl from the Midwest who goes to New York in search of fame and fortune. She becomes a model, signs with an agency and embarks on the road to success, determined to avoid the dangerous pitfalls over-the-hill model Mary Ashlon (Ann Dvorak) personifies. Yet Lily falls for affluent Steve Harleigh (Ray Milland), although she is aware that he is married to a crippled woman. Designed as a star vehicle for Turner, this studio project fell short of that goal; nonetheless, director George Cukor succeeded in eliciting a subtle performance from his leading lady. [More]
