Consensus: Though Jolie is appealing, Life or Something Like It is too contrived and predictable to convincingly convey its message of stopping to smell the roses.

She is also engaged to a Seattle Mariners star (Christian Kane). To top off her perfect life, her boss recommends her for a dream job, a network position in New York City. In order to increase her chances, he sends her to do field work with the renowned but difficult cameraman, Pete (Edward Burns). when she's on an assignment, Lanie runs into a homeless man, the prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub), who makes three predictions: that the Seattle Seahawks will beat the Denver Broncos 19-13, that it will hail the following day, and that she'll be dead by next Thursday. When the first two predictions come true, Lanie reevaluates her life and realizes she's missing out on the smaller things because of her ambition. Jolie is sexy, adorable, and whimsical in her first comedy role. The sizzling banter between Burns and Jolie recalls Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY. LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT is a lovely departure for director Steven Herek (ROCK STAR, BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE). [More]

If you can get past all the over-bearing 'Live your life for the moment' message, the movie can make your two hours pass by with a fair amount of enjoyment.

Lanie's professional success means she must be a failure at life, because she's driven by ambition and Doesn't Know How to Have Fun.

Contains the humor, characterization, poignancy, and intelligence of a bad sitcom.

Although Life or Something Like It is very much in the mold of feel-good movies, the cast and director Stephen Herek's polished direction pour delightfully piquant wine from aged bottles.

One thing's for sure: if you had only a week to live, you wouldn't want to waste 100 minutes on this.

Formulaic, delusional and about as accurate a depiction of life in television news (or something like it) as a Pillsbury bake-off.

Cloaks a familiar anti-feminist equation (career - kids = misery) in tiresome romantic-comedy duds.

With Life or Something Like it, director Stephen Herek is the envoy for the unreliable emotional demonstrations of Hollywood. But this film maintains a modicum of actual inspiration, nonetheless.

This was a humorless film about tiresome characters who kept getting more annoying the more serious they became.

... there isn't enough comedy or drama here to satisfy anyone's tastes in particular, and even Renée Zellweger dressed as a tart couldn't have made it any more watchable.

After taking in this brainless, by-the-book romantic comedy, you'll need a breath mint just to get the taste out of your mouth.
