Consensus: Though Jolie is appealing, Life or Something Like It is too contrived and predictable to convincingly convey its message of stopping to smell the roses.

She is also engaged to a Seattle Mariners star (Christian Kane). To top off her perfect life, her boss recommends her for a dream job, a network position in New York City. In order to increase her chances, he sends her to do field work with the renowned but difficult cameraman, Pete (Edward Burns). when she's on an assignment, Lanie runs into a homeless man, the prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub), who makes three predictions: that the Seattle Seahawks will beat the Denver Broncos 19-13, that it will hail the following day, and that she'll be dead by next Thursday. When the first two predictions come true, Lanie reevaluates her life and realizes she's missing out on the smaller things because of her ambition. Jolie is sexy, adorable, and whimsical in her first comedy role. The sizzling banter between Burns and Jolie recalls Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY. LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT is a lovely departure for director Steven Herek (ROCK STAR, BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE). [More]

This is Angelina Jolie's movie all the way, and she does not disappoint.

Life may be pre-packaged goodness, but it's served warm by a director comfortably basking in the glow of his preferred genre.

Lanie, who suggests a blow-dried human Q-tip, is so jarring on the eyes, it's difficult to concentrate on the story.

Explain to me why the big studios keep making romantic comedies which are so lacking in romance and comedy.

The disjointed mess flows as naturally as Jolie's hideous yellow 'do.

If you've never seen such a 'second chance at life' film, this one may work for you to some degree, especially if you're a connoisseur of/sucker for forced, contrived and predictable material and moments posing as heartfelt and moving ones.

A worthy woman's film and Jolie's best showcase to date.

Jolie's performance vanishes somewhere between her hair and her lips.

The big question in Life or Something Like It isn't 'Will Lanie live?' or even 'Can Lanie change?' but 'Am I ever going to give a fig?'

It appears as if even the filmmakers didn't know what kind of movie they were making.

Exploring value choices is a worthwhile topic for a film -- but here the choices are as contrived and artificial as Kerrigan's platinum-blonde hair.

What we have is a character faced with the possibility that her life is meaningless, vapid and devoid of substance, in a movie that is definitely meaningless, vapid and devoid of substance.

The whole film echoes Jolie's character -- stylish on the surface with no depth or substance.

The quirky potential of Herek's background and Jolie's charismatic persona ought to have been shaped into something more interesting than such pseudo-profound fluff.

You simply don't get a sense that Lanie's learned anything, other than that being too ambitious is a really bad thing.
