Particularly troubled is Patti's antagonistic relationship with her Bible-toting mother, Jeanette (Gena Rowlands in a remarkable performance), who is angered and ashamed that Patti is an unwed single mother who refuses to reveal the identity of her son's father. When their mother falls ill, Patti and Joe's lives are put into a tailspin, and they must confront the conflicts that will prevent them from living their lives and their dreams.
