Boasting a powerhouse cast that also includes Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise, the film features three storylines centered on the Iraq war. Cruise is Jasper Irving, a rising Republican senator who has summoned Janine Roth (Streep), the head journalist at a large news corporation, to sell her on the government's new military strategy. It's his hope that she in turn will sell the public on the idea. Meanwhile, a history professor (Redford) is trying to convince one of his more promising students to strive to make a difference in the world. Professor Malley believes Todd Hayes (Andrew Garfield) to be a bright young man, and he wants to know why Todd has become so apathetic about his schoolwork, and, after the two banter back and forth about the nature of activism, Malley tells him about two of his former students, Ernest and Arian (Michael Pena and Derek Luke), both of whom are currently serving in Iraq. Unbeknownst to Malley, at that very moment, Ernest and Arian are engaging in the exact military strategy that Senator Irving is discussing with Roth. Their mission has just gone terribly awry, and the men have fallen into enemy territory. So the senator and journalist argue, the professor and student debate, and all the while the wounded soldiers wait desperately for rescue. These disparate storylines slowly build and converge, culminating in a blaring statement about civic responsibility and social conscience. Cruise and Streep are a delight to watch, and their battle of words gives the most heat to the film. As one might expect, it casts an extremely critical eye at the current state of American politics. However, it veers toward hope, and a call to action. Redford, himself a longtime activist, appears to be sending an open letter to America: turn off the celebrity coverage and get involved. [More]

Carnahan and Redford show that politicians bank on public apathy, and the film ends up as a call to action for people to simply become more engaged.

The dialogue between Streep and Cruise is slick and musical, and the actors find the rhythm of it, but it doesn't convince as the kind of power-brokering that goes on in big-time politics and media.

Screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan as a way with dialogue; the verbal confrontations between Malley and Todd and Janine and Irving are choice, and all actors are in top form.

The film is built not upon characters and plot but upon ideas. That would be fine if the ideas were revolutionary or interesting, but they're fairly commonplace.

An uninvolving and depressing serving of talk about the inadequacy of politicians, the power of the media, senseless deaths overseas, and the apathy of youth.

Polemics can be very entertainment. Intellectual argument films are just boring.

Has the good sense to get in, make its case -- however clunky it may be -- and get out in under 90 minutes. The sad thing is that even at that brief length, it feels padded.

Through sheer force of star power, Cruise manages to temporarily hijack this lumpy lecture, and turn it into a battle cry against the corporate media that both built and destroyed him.

Why aren't these actors helping troops' families or give injured solders jobs in movies so they can support their loved ones? No matter what side of this issue you support, standing on the sidelines and throwing stones only leads to more stone-throwing.

The new Robert Redford movie, "Lions for Lambs," is nothing if not nostalgic and well-intentioned, and that's part of its problem.
