Thrill Jockey label owner Bettina Richards originally conceived the idea for this anthology as a way to celebrate Thrill Jockey's 10th anniversary. Uninterested in creating a traditional retrospective, Richards paired up with filmmaker Braden King in an attempt to dig deeper into the world of non-commercial music. The goal of LOOKING FOR A THRILL was to explore the drive, determination, and passions that drive musicians to create in a world that mostly values commercial viability. In 112 interviews with several stars of independent music (including Bjork, Yo La Tengo, and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth), King collects an array of intimate experiences and anecdotes about the music industry. While some artists credit a single concert or moment as the incident that prompted them to become musicians, others claim to be inspired largely by fellow artists. Several Thrill Jockey bands also make appearances, including The Sea And Cake, Tortoise, Freakwater, and more. Completed nearly three years after the label's 10th anniversary, LOOKING FOR A THRILL is Thrill Jockey's 100th release. [More]
