Trailer Bulletin: Dragons, Magic & "Eragon"

OK, so it looks a lot like "Lord of the Rings," and sure, even "Eragon" sounds a lot like "Aragorn," but after reading Christopher Paolini's very fine adventure novel, I'm willing to forgive a little familiarity. Stefen Fangmeier's "Eragon" opens on December 15th, but you can see the brand new trailer right now.

Synopsis: "A boy named Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest. At first, he thinks it's a lucky discovery, something that will bring meat to his poor family for the winter. Instead, it brings a dragon hatchling, and Eragon is soon thrust into a world of magic and power through which he and the dragon must navigate."

"Eragon" stars newcomer Edward Speleers in the title role, and the supporting cast is filled with names like John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons, Robert Carlyle, Djimon Hounsou, and Sienna Guillory.

Looks kind of cheesy like i was expecting, but at least i finally got to see some footage. It has me interested, but I can't say I'm too terribly excited.

Gee, could they have made the trailer any DARKER?

Maybe the directory only yelled "Camera!... Action!" and forgot the "Lights!" part.

Looks alright, I'd put it more in line with Dragonheart than LotR and Narnia...at the moment anywho. Last shot of the trailer was pretty freakin' sweet though, lol.

i couldn't understand the tone of the film. on one hand, it seems to reach for epic, realistic scope a la LoTR especially with an actor like Jeremy Irons, but it also seems a little too tame like Narnia, so in the end, it comes off as cheesy like Dragonheart. anybody have any idea what the books were like?

It sounds a lot of LOTR, but the film does look visually promising. The dialogue delivered by John Malkovitch sounds pretty plastic though, manufactured from countless other villains in previous fantasies. Malkovitch is a great actor, but the lines just sound cliche. One shouldn't go by the trailer though.

malkovitch has a TINY part in this movie (his character in the book actually doesnt even have any scenes, hes just talked about). So dont worry about that.

As for the book, it is filled with action and alot more "horror" elements than Narnia, more along the lines of say the spider in LOTR (not that there are spiders or anything, just that kind of darkness every once and a while) and the battle at the end is super intense and there are alot of hard times while eragon is getting from his town to where the battle is...so it should fall between LOTR: TT on action and Narnia i guess. and its PG-13 so its not that tame

Dumb, dumb, dumb. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but maybe something a little bit more original. It looks like they're going to rely on Jeremy Irons to play himself (gruffy and charismatic). They would probably have gotten a better job if they cast Orlando Bloom in the title role, that way they would at least get the girly fans to show up.

Unlike LOTR, it looks like they're focusing on all the wrong things, ignoring some aspects of the book, while making up other things. It's gonna take awful lot of good publicity and word of mouth to get me out to the theatre to see this one.

Woah, something is very wrong there. Saphira was completely silent through the whole trailer. If they don't let us hear her in the movie, then it'll suck. Because she has so much personality and is so inherently likable, she really helped the book entertain. Do not screw this up, Hollywood!

Even though it's completely Star Wars with fantasy and dragons (read the book. It's way more Star Wars then it's Lord of the Rings.), it has so much charm that it's still worthwhile. I've said this so many times, and I still stand by it.

If nothing, this needs to do well enough to ensure Eldest is made. Because Eldest is way better.

I hate to post a comment where I merly say "i agree", but I was actually very curious about this movie, because people have said the book is along the lines of 'Harry Potter' and LOTR, I didn't really care much for the LOTR books (please don't scream at me), but the movies were better (although if you've seen Clerks 2 I feel pretty closely to what Randal felt like on 'the trilogy') I really like Harry Potter so I was hoping for that, but the trailer feels waaay too much like Narnia, and honestly that Movie was pretty boring, and lacking in pretty much everything that makes a movie engrossing and fun. We'll have to see what the Tomatometer says I guess.

I'm not quite sure what to think about it...I loved the book but CP ( the writer) had nothing to do with the making of the movie...and you know how movies are never as good as the books. I never imagined any of the people looking like the cast...but hopefully they do the movie well. Personally i don't think it is like LotR , Star Wars , or Narnia..the only one i really liked out of those was Narnia which was a favorite childhood book. I didn't like LotR or Star Wars , so maybe its just wishfull thinking on my part...Anyway , good luck to the producers making it as good as the book!
