New Line and Producer Zaentz "Ring" Out a Settlement
by Scott Weinberg | August 30, 2005
Discuss Article
According to Variety, Producer Saul Zaentz will receive about $20 million from New Line Cinema (on top of the $168 million he earned from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy), thereby ending a lawsuit before it goes to trial. So that's nearly $190 million bucks for the 84-year-old Mr. Zaentz; not too shabby considering he didn't actually produce the "Lord of the Rings" movies.

Mr. Zaentz purchased the rights to the "Rings" back in 1976 (long before anyone imagined that a live-action movie could be made of the property), produced the oft-maligned Ralph Bakshi animated version, and then just let the property sit in the oven and cook for a few decades. And based on the numbers that the Zaentz estate has been pulling in, it seems pretty obvious that the canny producer snagged himself a sweet percentage deal once New Line got the green-light.

"In his lawsuit Zaentz claimed that New Line cheated him out of nearly $20 million by calculating royalties based on the net grosses it received from foreign distributors. Producer claimed he was entitled to royalties based on foreign distribs' gross receipts, an assertion the studio disputed."

Both sides state that the issue is now resolved, but New Line still has another legal battle on its hands; director Peter Jackson claims that his camp has been shorted some serious profits from DVD sales, merchandising, and video game tie-ins.

I don't see what's wrong with getting the money you deserve. That guy made an unbelievably smart investment years ago and now he's finally cashing in. Lucky for his heirs...he'll probably croak pretty soon...CHA CHING CHA CHING

I wonder how much he paid for the rights back in 1967--anyone know.
It is his property he should be compensated.

The Lord of the Rings is as much his as The Beatles songs are Michael Jackson's. Buisness sometimes can really put a dark shadow on the most beautiful things. I think 190 million dollars is compensation enough for doing absolutely nothing.

It's not like he even took a chance, NewLine was the one with their necks on the line putting everything they had into it, sparing no expense, keeping it (against advice) three seperate movies. Then they put together a team that produced the best, and most beautiful, epic trilogy ever made. And this guys like, "190 million is bullshit!! I'm suing you for making me ridiculously filthy rich you bastards!! I want 10 generations of my family to be worthless spoiled snotty rich assholes not just 9!!!"

seriously, i heard him say it. you can't make this up.

He then grabbed a dead chinese baby that was killed for being female that he had payed handsomely for over the internet and started to snack on it's flesh and said,
"Did you know that with this new money I'm getting," crunch, crunch, "that approx. 11,000 families could have been fed well, and housed comfortably for a year on what I made for doing nothing on the lord of the rings trilogy, hahahaha, I do say chap, isn't that amazing!?" Stopping finally to swallow the chunk of dead baby he was chewing.
"Oh well, I guess I'll buy my 20 year old wife some bigger tits and then go to Thailand and see if I could procure some children sex slaves. I do say that would be most delightfull entertainment for the weekend! That last batch just didn't last long enough to get any real pleasure from"

Oh me, now that was fun. The guys probably really nice, and got lucky. I'm just jealous. Sorry if any of that offended anyone, I have a really dark sense of humor.

Well, at least Zaentz certainly deserves the money, ya know, because of all the hard work he put into the book and making the movies.
