Following their success five years before with SWINGERS, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn team up again in MADE, a comedy about two very different down-on-their-luck L.A. friends who get caught up in a dangerous deal in New York City. Favreau stars as Bobby, a hardworking, very serious construction worker who dreams of becoming a boxer and settling down with his stripper girlfriend (Famke Janssen) and her young daughter. Vaughn plays Ricky, an obnoxious ne'er-do-well who thinks that pulling off a big job for boss Max (Peter Falk) will be their ticket to the big time. The duo is sent off to New York to take part in a deal they know nothing about; while Bobby waits calmly for them to be discreetly contacted, Ricky never shuts his mouth, barking orders at random people, flashing his green and his wry smile all over town, annoying the heck out of everyone he meets, especially Ruiz (Sean "P-Diddy" Combs), who is their connection. The film is beautifully shot by master cinematographer Christopher Doyle, who recently filmed Wong Kar-Wai's stunning IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. Bobby and Ricky make the perfect pair; Favreau is often silent in scenes, watching deadpan as Vaughn steals the show as the brazen, overbearing, but lovable Ricky. To lend authenticity to the film, Favreau shot it in such landmarks as Hollywood High, Tavern on the Green, and the Central Park Zoo, and he hired SOPRANOS stars Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy), Federico Castelluccio (Furio), and Drea de Matteo (Adriana) to further the mob connection. The film was coproduced by Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie in 1983's beloved A CHRISTMAS STORY. [More]

There are very funny moments, and some wonderful dialogue, but the film's self-consciously serious moments sit uncomfortably with the buddy banter.

Favreau gives his film a curious final touch of earnestness, even sentimentality, but he gets away with it and Made swings funkily along.

The natural rhythms of the (largely improvised) script create characters and situations that are authentic, hilarious and engaging.

If the film's too ready to go with the flow of Chris Doyle's handheld camerawork, and sometimes seems ad hoc, its spot-on attention to the faux pas of the moment certainly raises a smile.

Well-written and well-acted, though your enjoyment will largely depend on how high your Vince Vaughn tolerance level is.

If you liked Swingers, you'll like Made. But don't expect as many quick laughs.

With both movies and TV constantly mining mob life for script fodder, Made never comes up with a new twist on the material.

The film isn’t as clever as Swingers but it boasts enough witty dialogue to make it entertaining.

If you love voyeuristic films where the film maker almost gives an eerie spying-on-their-lives-as-they-live-them sensation, Made's been made for you.

Likely to leave fans missing the fresh hit of Swingers and leave newcomers wondering what some of the fuss was about.

The routines don't have the innocence (or anarchic slapstick) of Laurel and Hardy, but the set-up is the same, focusing on two blue-collar dopes who frustrate their supervisors.

The movie is difficult to describe because it's not what happens that matters, it's how it happens and why.

Made, with its undernourished plot and fizzle of a climax, isn't exactly breaking new ground in mob comedy realism.

The script is nicely seasoned with jokes and surprise twists (right up to a contrived sentimental ending), and the two lead actors plunge into their roles with contagious enthusiasm.
