McConaughey P.I.?
Actor said to be mulling over the script.
It's been rumored for so long, it's taken on something like urban legend status -- but a Magnum P.I. feature film starring Matthew McConaughey may actually come to pass.
Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider reports that McConaughey has been formally offered the role of the wisecracking ex-Navy SEAL/Hawaiian shirt-wearing private detective played by Tom Selleck on CBS from 1980-88.
According to EW's sources, McConaughey is "reading the script from writer/director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball) and will decide shortly."

stockjunkie writes: on Apr 04 2008 05:47 AM Is Hollywood really this desperate? Don't get me wrong - I loved Magnum P.I as a kid... but a movie? And McConaughey as the choice for a character we all associate with Tom Selleck? I guess they figure he's got that cool, likable charm that Tom brought to the role? (Reply to this) |

TombstoneLawDog writes: on Apr 04 2008 09:30 AM Much as I passionately DESPISE, revile and wish unspeakable things to happen to McConaughey when he makes those sh#tball movies with Kate Hudson, I don't hate this idea as much as I thought I would. Tom Selleck WAS Magnum and that's pretty much all there is to that, but since it is well-nigh inevitable that this movie *will* ultimately be made, I think it's even possible that McConaughey could be alright as long as the script is REALLY good- 'gets' the point of the show. I CONCEDE this may be impossible or at least highly unlikely. (Reply to this) |

K7Leetha writes: on Apr 06 2008 12:42 PM TV shows are TV shows because TV shows are NOT MOVIES. Instead of making the movie, why don't Tom Sellek and Magnum P.I. fans just send in the money they would spend to go see the movie in order to stop the producers from creating this debauchery, in an effort to save their conscience minds from tainting the memories of the beloved series from looking like some retarded throw-back to a short-lived, long-remembered decade that gave us icons who were cool in the SAME decade, not to be squelched into some laugh-box sitcom nostalgia with some glimmer of hope that we might not want to kill the writers afterwards. In other words, LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Reply to this) |

ilovemygoatee writes: on Apr 06 2008 07:21 PM This is rather depressing. Soon I'm sure every somewhat successful show from the 80's will be made into a movie, and then Hollywood will go onto whatever decade they can find and remake every t.v. show America has ever watched for more than one season. Dang it why can't Hollywood come up with its own ideas, or heck borrow ideas from old stuff just don't try and remake them. Well there is my rant, and here's to hoping there will never be a Remington Steele movie, that would kill me. (Reply to this) |

Cephidmaster writes: on Apr 06 2008 08:41 PM Actually, I agree with one of the other posters who said that if we can't have Tom then Matt will have to do. Im surprised that no one has mentioned how the role of Magnum would be sort of same ole same ole of all the other roles that Matt has played. Doesnt he always play a guy whose a slacker but dedicated and lives by the seat of his pants surrounded by surf and sun...hmmm...yep that's every matt movie from the last 4 years at least. I also agree that this Magnum movie is like 10 years overdue. But if I can't have Magnum...I'll take Jesse Stone. Finally I disagree with the poster who joked about McGuyver...I currently own the series on DVD and it never gets old. I think that today's jaded youth needs a story about a guy who lives green/vegetarian and doesn't need fancy fighting skills and gadgets because he's got his brain and a rubber band. Short of that, I'd take a great Disney movie along the same lines with a female as the lead role--we need to encourage more girls to take up math and science. As for Remington Steele, there's no replacement for Brosnan. (Reply to this) |
